Confirm Identity Yet Again

Hello,

I've been a member since the 90s.   Sold and bought on this same computer.  I know based on search on the community back in 2016 or 2017 one had to confirm their identity.

Never had any problems until last year where I got this confirm your identify page sporadically.  But now from June 4th, 2019 to today I've gotten this message 7 TIMES.   It's getting old and ridiculous.   It happens when I list a new item or sell a similar item.  It's happened two days in a row at one point.   It's getting beyond ridiculous especially since the message says eBay doesn't recognize my computer yet as stated I've always used this computer so there's no reason why eBay should not recognize it.

I spoke to Ebay CSRs 2 or 3 times already.  Did everything that was suggested (change answers to security questions, clear history, clear cache, etc., etc.) yet I still get this confounded message.

Can anyone explain why and is there ANYTHING technical I can do to stop this from happening again?  I believe it's on eBay's side because they're the ones saying they don't recognize the computer.  There has to be something they can do or change to fix this problem.

Sorry for the vent.

If you are using more than 1 account you should check your site preferences as logging in and out can remove the site preference to stay logged in by default. From what ebay told me it is to protect users on public devices like shared work computers or computer labs.  Try clearing your browsers history as sometimes this can help. Usually this only happens once per day or 2 for me using a windows 10 pc and Microsoft edge as a browser. If you are using a older computer with a older browser this could be a bug in ebays software. However most of the time they are aware of issues like this but do not fix them in a timely manor to save money.  1even if your computer is a few years from the support cut of with Microsoft it does not mean ebay has to support it too. These issue will probably become more prevalent and frequent so if you are going to be using ebay regularly it may be a good idea to get something newer.

Confirm Identity Yet Again

Have two accounts but don't use the other one much at all.  Just use this one.

Do not have problem staying logged in.  My problem is having to confirm my identity over and over again.

I don't use a public computer, it's my home computer and it's not shared.

My history, cache, etc. are automatically cleared every time I log off...this does resolve the problem.

I use and have been using Firefox as my browser with no problems...until last year when confirming identity was sporadic, but now it's getting worse.

My computer is somewhat old, but, again, I've never had a problem like this.  I've been using eBay since the 90s.

Can't afford to get something newer.

Thanks for the info though.

Does this problem happen if you sign in using a different browser?

If this happens with multiple browsers it is possible that your account has been targeted for extra security scrutiny due to something suspicious such as multiple simultaneous sign-in attempts from distant geographic locations. eBay does not really explain what triggers such scrutiny or how to avoid it, so if that is the case, you will just have to put up with it for a time.

If it only happens with one particular browser, the issue might be cookie-related.

If your browser is set to reject cookies or clear them upon exit, you will have sign-in issues.

There are cases where an individual corrupt or stuck eBay cookie can cause sign-in problems -- usually that means being unable to sign in at all, but it might cause repeated sign-in requests. "Clearing all cookies" might not actually delete a corrupt cookie, so if you suspect such, try deleting eBay cookies individually, and make sure they are not "stuck" or "blocked".

Note that every time you delete eBay cookies you will have to sign in again, and likely have to go back into your account settings site preferences to recheck the "keep me signed in on this computer" box and hit "apply".

See this thread for an example where deleting an individual cookie solved sign-in issues:

Hi.

Thank you for the information, however, the problem isn't a sign in issue.  I can sign in fine.  It's when I'm in eBay and either I do a new listing or click on the "sell similar" link in an ended listing that this message started popping up..."EBAY Confirm your account.  It looks like you signed in from a different computer.  Before you continue, we need to verify your identify and confirm it's really you.  Choose how you would like to receive your confirmation code. We'll send a message to the option you choose. Phone or text."

It was suggested by eBay CSRs that I clear cookies, cache, history, whatever, to resolve this issue; however, this issue still persists and to be honest it's getting annoying.

How many times do I have to confirm my identity when I'm not using a different computer as they're stating in this message?

Are you doing anything that might lead eBay to think you are not the same person using the same computer? Changing your IP-address or using a VPN? If not, there is probably nothing to be done about it.

I get similar messages regularly from one of my banks (but only that one) -- "It looks like you have never signed in from this computer before", despite the fact that nothing has changed since the last time I signed in a week previously. No idea why that one particular bank is suspicious. It is quite annoying.

@krazybouthorses   Older computers often have outdated OS systems that are no longer supported, thus limiting the type of updates they can receive to stay more current.  Prices have come way way down  over the years on laptops  and that might be something to consider.  As to the security page, could you take a screen shot of it and post?  If its the one I think it is then it was asked about on The Community and possibly the Weekly Chat, they gave a reason but it eludes me at the moment.  With eBay gearing up for Managed Payments their system will have to be more secure then it is today as they will be gathering personal financial information for those who remain to sell on their venue.

Nope.  I do the same thing I do every day.  Nothing changed.

My mother gets that message you mention from her bank all the time; and, yes, it is annoying just like this issue with the confirm my identity with eBay.

This is the page that shows up more often that I want.  It showed up again today when I went to relist an item using the "Sell Similar" link in the listing.

@krazybouthorses  Thanks for the screen shot, that's not the one I get ... mine is in the center of the page (laptop) and I have to enter username and password and then sometimes they show one of those pics of skewed numbers and I have to type in what I see.

I know what you're talking about, but I don't have to do that one.  That's not my issue.  Though those are a pain also.
