I used the bulk active editor and it was amazing.

I used the bulk active editor and it was amazing.

Saved countless hours cleaning up listings.   Made donations and thank you so much shipscript.

Question ...   I have noticed an unkown amount  of my active listing  are showing a blank page on mozilla browser.   All look fine in chrome.

The title and picture are showing fine in mozilla.   So its hard to identify offening listings.  Im currently running over 10,000 listings.

Do you have any idea why these listing have a blank page.  Im concerned because  anyone using mozilla will not see my item description ...   or any way to identify offending listings without hunt and peck method  :-(

Thanks so much

Okay,  Both files  uploaded sucessfully (11700) and (exclude 11700).  Excel download shows success.    So far all looks very very good.  Im amazed at your skill set and the versility of this tool.  I just can't thank you enough.

Even other problem listing where there was a blank on page on front side and text only showing when revising.  All the fonts and colors were missing plus I was not able to successfully complete revision.  I had several random instances of this problem and just made new listings.    Now the listing is showing and I'm able to revise text with font and colors.  222488139904

Question.  Is  there possibly a way to find all this type of offending listings ...

Really the most difficult part,  since title and pictures are fine, is to weed these offenders out of the mix.

Im sending you a paypal donation.  Going forward,  if you able to identify other  problems,  I am pleased to  retain your services.

Thank you for using and reporting on the editor tool. Smiley Happy

Do you have a few example listings? There are a couple of issues that may affect Firefox. One that is commonly seen on the forums occurs when elements are too deeply nested, as we have seen in the case of eBay's iterative font tags.

Another may be complex or late arriving content. That problem usually clears itself when the page is reloaded.

I picked this listing at random (372302254554) and see 10 nested font tags, so I suspect nesting to be a likely reason. It takes a lot, perhaps 50 or more, to make the listing disappear. We've seen hundreds in some listings.

The Active Content Editor has a selectable filter to remove those eBay font tags, but only when they appear first and last around the description. Once some other tag, like the viewport meta tag, is prepended, the standard filter won't clear the tags.

I ran one of your categories through the Active Content Scanner and used this "Custom Capture" filter to look for eBay font tags (although the exact style of the tag may change depending on the browser you used while listing)

<font rwr="1" style="font-family: Arial;">

The scanner found a number of listings with more than 100 tags, examples:

https://ebay.com/itm/222449845755
https://ebay.com/itm/222449841304
https://ebay.com/itm/371870104482
https://ebay.com/itm/371870088011

Those descriptions work for me, but I may have a different Firefox version. So check those in your browser to see if they display.  If they don't, then let's see when the nesting fails. These have more than 50 tags:

https://ebay.com/itm/222450645105
https://ebay.com/itm/222450642763
https://ebay.com/itm/371901803611

https://ebay.com/itm/371951260158

If any of those are failing for you, then we'll need to work out a custom filter to remove those eBay font tags.

When I look at this listing's HTML, I see that there are several versions of eBay's font tag, so there are even more than the scan tool found.

http://www.isdntek.com/ebaytools/ActiveContentSandbox.htm?371870088011

Then scroll down to the "Markup" tab to see how this one listing might be cleaned up.  I'm not sure that we can handle all your listings the same way, without losing something. It depends on how much other content got mixed up with the font tags.

I used a different "Custom Capture" filter on the same smaller category, and WOW!  Using only rwr="1" as the capture, the tool is now finding listings with hundreds of tags.

For instance, this one has over 400 tags, and it disappears in my Firefox, so I think that is how we would look for the problem listings:

http://www.isdntek.com/ebaytools/ActiveContentSandbox.htm?371878704593

But applying the same custom filter seems to clean it up, as shown in the "Markup" tab and on the "Filtered" tab preview popup.

This one with 300 also disappears: 222440794663

as does this on with 200 font tags: 371923022954

This one with 175 continues to display: 222453990010

So now we have an idea of the threshold, but in your case, can probably address listings as low as 10-20 tags.

Thank you so much for  helping us.   I will donate generously for your time.

I opened up each link for the listings you sent in email.  They displayed fine in firefox.

Ok in the sandbox I see your selections and filters for item 371878704593.

Going forward ...

Check the 6 boxes you checked such as remove active content and non ebay links etc

I use rwr="1" as custom capture for  10,000 listings.

Then copy and paste your code in filters.

Run scan

How am I doing so far  lol ...

Related Question -  How do I run the remainder of listings not cover in first scan...

Sort by  time ending ...

Thank you so much!

Robert

You have about 12K items over several categories, so there are a few different ways to run the scan.  I think I would choose to run by category.  I would recommend isolating the home and garden category (11700) by choosing to "include" that in the first scan. And then pick up the balance at a later time by "excluding" that same category from search the next time.

But, the first order of business is to see if we can uniformly address all of your listings with one same filter. This listing is coded a little differently than the others I tested, yet the filters still work because the checkbox filter picks up where the custom filters fail. I'm not sure they will all turn out successfully, so I need to do some testing. Don't want to jump right into the deep end yet.

Note that I am mentioning three different tools in this post:

The Active Content Scanner, Active Content Sandbox, and Active Content Editor.

I picked category "Washers & Dryers" and scanned that group of 2000 items in the Scanner with a "Custom Capture" of

</font></font></font></font>

to see just how prevalent the problem might be. 1300 listings had four or more font tags and 700 did not. That is almost a big enough difference to try to reduce the workload to just 1300 in that category, which could mean that the 12K total listings could be reduced to around 8K revisions.

I always try to reduce my computer workload because I have a poor connection, so scans take too long on my computer. The Bulk Scanner can filter out a results list of fewer items that can be pushed into the Active Content Editor, which is how I reduce the load on my computer. But, that adds a few more steps to your job and can be confusing to explain and follow.

Or, we could just plow forward and revise all 12K items, whether they need it or not. To pursue that route, you would break your Editor job into two scans based on the 11700 category and use the same filter to revise all of your items as two separate jobs.  On the Editor tool's Site Categories field, choose "selection" from the drop list to open a grid.  Put 11700 in the "include" box and X-close the overlay (on the second job, you will move the 11700 over to the "exclude" box).

This screen is from a different tool, but the category list is similar.

http://www.isdntek.com/ebaytools/ListingPhotoSizes_support/ListingPhotoSizesScreenshot_categories.gif

At the moment, I have a custom filter that will look for listings with four or more contiguous font tags near the beginning and end. It's not perfect, but I think it will handle most of your listings.

The filter will strip off the meta tag and style tag at the front, and the File Exchange logo at the end. It will then evaluate whether the remaining code has four or more contiguous font tags at the beginning and end, and will remove them.  We have to assume that sometimes you have added your own fonts (whether you did or not), so it will not remove the tags if there are fewer than four in a row.  When those are stripped, it will put the meta tag, style tag, and File Exchange innoculation back into the code.

This would be the type of filter that you could use again later if you needed to again purge eBay's tags, since it is capable of stripping the codes that were added in a prior File Exchange batch.

The filter goes into the "Saved Job Settings" of the Bulk Active Content Editor, where it must be applied using the "Populate my Settings" button before running a scan. You can utilize the box on the first screen (tab 1)  prior to retrieving listings from eBay or on the last screen (tab 3) prior to running the scan of those listings. After you populate the settings, you will be able to view those same settings on the "Scan Setup" screen (tab 2) prior to starting the scan.

http://www.isdntek.com/ebaytools/ActiveContent_support/ActiveContent_editor_addjobfilters.gif

This is the filter I have thus far that can be used in the Editor.

?itm=372205850064&act=true&lnk=true&eby=true&ssl=true&is=true&vp=true&widget=eadd_efnt_fe_&filter=%253Cstyle%253E%2520%7C%253C%252Fstyle%253E%7C%2C%253Cmeta%7C%253E%7C%2C%253Ccenter%2520style%253D%2522display%253Anone%253B%2522%253E%253Cimg%2520src%253D%2522https%253A%252F%252Fpics.ebay.com%252Faw%252Fpics%252Fviewitem%252Ffe%252FimgFePowered_88x33.gif%2522%253E%253C%252Fcenter%253E%7C%7C%2C%253C%252Ffont%253E%253C%252Ffont%253E%253C%252Ffont%253E%253C%252Ffont%253E%7C%253C%253CTO-END%253E%253E%7C%2C%252F(%255E%255B%255Cs%255CS%255D*%253F(%253Cfont%255B%255E%253E%255D%252B%253F%253E%255Cs*)%257B4%252C%257D)%252Fi%7C%7C

You can pretest the filter in the Sandbox tool by prepending the filter with the URL of the Sandbox tool. Then you can put a different item number into the Sandbox tool and SCAN to see what the filter will do to that item.

http://www.isdntek.com/ebaytools/ActiveContentSandbox.htm?itm=372205850064&act=true&lnk=true&eby=true&ssl=true&is=true&vp=true&widget=eadd_efnt_fe_&filter=%253Cstyle%253E%2520%7C%253C%252Fstyle%253E%7C%2C%253Cmeta%7C%253E%7C%2C%253Ccenter%2520style%253D%2522display%253Anone%253B%2522%253E%253Cimg%2520src%253D%2522https%253A%252F%252Fpics.ebay.com%252Faw%252Fpics%252Fviewitem%252Ffe%252FimgFePowered_88x33.gif%2522%253E%253C%252Fcenter%253E%7C%7C%2C%253C%252Ffont%253E%253C%252Ffont%253E%253C%252Ffont%253E%253C%252Ffont%253E%7C%253C%253CTO-END%253E%253E%7C%2C%252F(%255E%255B%255Cs%255CS%255D*%253F(%253Cfont%255B%255E%253E%255D%252B%253F%253E%255Cs*)%257B4%252C%257D)%252Fi%7C%7C

You may be able to just go forward and scan your listings with this info, but you'll probably have more questions first, so be sure to ask.

Also, be sure to save the backups that are offered after the scan, in case we have to undo anything.

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. Busy weekend.

The screenshots show you are performing the correct steps. The results look a little low, but I presume the scan was not very far along at that point.

When the scan ends I would expect you to have 5K-6K  items to repair of those 8K items.  After you download and save your zip files, while your scan screen is still up, you could click any of the "VIEW" buttons on any of the pages to look at a few sample listings to make sure they look good.

I ran a follow up scan and still found 2500 listings that need to be repaired. They may have been rejected by File Exchange if they were expired or renewing between the time of the scan and the upload to File Exchange. Or if there is some other compliance issue like missing UPC or item specifics. Your "results" file that File Exchange produces should give reasons for rejection.

Here are the two zip files to repair those remaining listings:

fer_15263416365368.zip

fer_15263406131310.zip

To your question of how to find those disappearing descriptions? Those occur when the nesting approaches 200 font tags deep.  So we could probably use the Bulk Active Content Scanner

http://www.isdntek.com/ebaytools/ActiveContentScanner.htm

with a "Custom Capture" of 50 font tags to locate those listings:

</font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font></font>

Put the above string into the "Custom Capture" slot before starting the scan.

It would probably take between 150 and 200 nested font tags to make a description disappear, so if scan results uncover listings with 3 or more sets of 50 font tags (over 150 font tags), that listing may be disappearing.

Here are the results of a scan I performed to find listings with more than 120 font tags (I used a continuous string of 120 tags in the Custom Capture slot). There are still 289 listings in the danger zone. If you unzip and process the above two data files through File Exchange, these should clear up in the revision:

I checked a few of the revised listings from the above list, and I see an unanticipated problem. In some listings, there were more embedded fonts than expected (fonts within the actual text, as opposed to the eBay wrapper fonts) and the filter was too aggressive.  Here are some examples, where the description was wiped out along with the tags.

Because we have backup files, we can undo the work and go again. To do so, we would undo the last revisions first.  These are the originals from today's revisions:

I'll need to take a closer look as some of those problem listings to see if I can work out a more complex filter to anticipate some of those embedded tags.

Hi,  Ok I have uploaded files per your recent message.  They are in que and being processed.

And I totally understand its a hodgepodge of mishmash.

Honestly I have no idea what happened.  My listings are so simple now since a couple years ago.

It all started leaving autiva and their left behind script ( scrolling gallery) I believe.  But Im just speculating.   Since then,  its just about listing the item as simply as possible using a few saved templates.   Here is a sample listing.

Question  - do I proceed with uploading all the original files from the  previous fix ...

Thank you!

Rob

I apologize for not anticipating the hodgepodge.  I'll write some new filters and hopefully have something for you later tomorrow that will work more smoothly.

@rob_brothersinc

I'm going to see if the editor can be changed to handle this situation a little better since this problem is becoming more prevalent. Please bear with me for for a couple of days.

The tools have been updated to perform a more aggressive removal of ebay's font tags. That means we don't need to use any special customized text filters like we did before.

Using the Bulk Active Content Editor, you would again break your listings into two  jobs: include category 11700, and exclude category 11700.

After the listings load, and you are on the Scan setup screen, checkmark these filters:

  • Add Mobile Viewport
  • Add Image Style tag
  • eBay Dated Adder
  • File Exchange
  • SellingManagerPro
  • Font tags (eBay)
  • NoBreak spaces

Both the Mobile Viewport filter and Image Style tag filter will delete any multiples and replace with only a single.

File Exchange will innoculate against its logo, and SellingManagerPro should remove its logo.

eBay Dated Adder will attempt to remove the line and datestamp that eBay uses to demarcate appended content, since you don't have anything down there anymore.

Font Tags (eBay) is going to be the workhorse. It will try to separate eBay's font tags from your own font tags and remove only eBay's. Quite a challenge that won't succeed on messy and corrupted code. So far, most of yours seem to be balanced. Codes can become unbalanced when a user manually adds or removes chunks of HTML code.  If corrupted code is encountered (where closing tags don't match up), the worst that I anticipate is that the fonts could look different (and perhaps not in an attractive way).

I threw in NoBreak spaces for good measure.  I saw only a few instances of the hard-space (no-break-space) code, and it is not a problem in your listings, but it can be a problem for sellers whose CSS or HTML includes two spaces in a row and the editor converts one of them to a hard space. If a normal space in an attribute or style value is turned into a hard space, the attribute becomes invalid. Again, not a problem for you.

Another spacing problem is when people try to center text by leaning on the spacebar. A run of spaces turns into hard-space (non-breaking space), which would cause the listing to be mobile unfriendly.  The HardSpace Run filter will remove them when there are five or more strung together.  Similarly, leaning on the underscore bar to create a horizontal line across the page can cause problems on mobile, so the Underscore Run  filter can be used to convert a long run into a friendlier <hr> horizontal rule.

The FontSize filter is one you may consider, but it is an incomplete solution in your case. The filter will look for older font tags with font size 6 or 7 and downsize them to font size 5 so that they'll fit better on mobile. In your case, some of your listings use styles and some use fonts, so the listings with styles would not be affected by applying this filter.  Giant fonts become a problem on mobile devices when a single word won't fit across the screen and the user has to scroll to read it.  Short words and hyphenated words escape that problem.

These filters can be tested on individual listings in the SandBox tool to see their effect.  Click the "Custom" or "More"  buttons to access the full list of filters. The "Markup" tab will color-code all the changes that are being made to give a feel for the scope of changes.  The "Filtered" tab has a preview button to see the results. You may want to test a few listings with the Font Size filter to see what it does and decide if you are ready to use that or not. If you are, we should probably try to write a custom filter to address the oversized styles that would be skipped by this filter.  Otherwise, since your text is short, you may want to leave the size alone and live with a little scrolling.

Thank you for the update and upgrades to the scanner tool!

I  scanned items 3  times yesterday and after it finished the last batch

the wheel would just turn and turn. ( Just before creating file exchange files)  I restarted computer and used different browser to see if its on my end.     Also I let it sit all  night and wheel still turning this morning.  (screenshot)  Today I will try on another computer using chrome and see if scan takes and converts to files.

Thanks again,

Rob
