I give up, can't figure out where this picture was taken. One clue is the train cars are marked PFE (Pacific Fruit Express) 8515 and the ship name might be New York. Any ideas or suggestion would be appreciated.

Is it a disaster or just a scrapyard?

I think it is a disaster. The PEF car were reefer cars to haul fruit and vegatables and I don'e think they would scrap them.

It reminds me of the 1917 Halifax Munition ship explosion.

You should ask the fellow who writes this blog, Anthony W. Thompson:

He actually wrote a book about the Pacific Fruit Express and bet he'd be happy to help.

Yes, I was going to say Halifax Explosion as well. The docks were right in the centre of it. It's just that that little building at the front of the train doesn't look damaged (which was why I was wondering if it might be a scrapyard rather than a disaster aftermath).

This is probably not the correct answer but in 1922 Roseville CA the ice packing house of PFE was bombed during labor unrest.

Thanks to everyone for the help. It is not Roseville CA since Roseville is in the middle of California and has large ship would have trouble getting their. I am trying to figure out how to contact the authors of the book mentioned below and possilbly find a railroad forum to post the questions too. It would seem if you went to all the trouble of making a real photo postcard, you would at least date and put the location on it.

What a great view! Can you get a higher resolution scan of the name on the ship?
I'm trying to figure out what the writing is on the left side right underneath the train cars. Looks like it might be "63d St ave Co". So maybe 63rd Street (something) Company?

Hello
I don't know this looks to be storm damage.
Because look at other storm damages on the coast you'll see train cars lying on their sides.
The ship to me looks like it might be on land.
I have seen pictures of storm damage in Galveston and railcars were lying on their sides and boats were on land
I don't know I'm just guessing.
