Ebay is depriving buyers of a critical optionm that of selecting a payment method at time of purchae.
This began with *linking* offers, so I stopped making offers. Ebay then went on to requiring automatic payment adter 4 days. This did not cause problems as the option to select a method was still available. Now that payments are instant, I will rely much less often on ebay, until they reverse this policy.
Incidentally, I have used ebay for over 20 yeras, always paying very promptly. Ebay should make exceptions in the case of proven prompt payers!

Not all buyers feel deprived by this.
I like it although I rarely buy multiple items from a seller so combined shipping isn't an issue for me.
I don't make offers I don't mean to follow through on (I'm not saying you do) so if I make an offer and it's accepted autopay saves me the trouble of going through the payment process. I only have one payment source set up so no decision to make there.
When bidding on an auction I place my max bid late in the game and can just check "My Purchases" the next morning or whenever to see if I won or not.
The seller gets paid promptly (happy seller) and I don't have to bother with the checkout-payment process (happy buyer)...............Good for me.............

Sellers who have been bitten by buyers making offers and not following through with payment have been asking eBay for something to stop this practice.
Hense the providing payment when making offers or placing bids. Some sellers have that requirement set some don't use that requirement at all.

I will simply buuy less often via ebay. In 22 years of ebay purchases I have always paid promptly, isong whichever one of FOUR payment methods I find suitable ate tme of purchase. This is gone, in y case for no good reason, and I will act accordingly.

If you want to be able to choose your method of payment when you purchase, that is still possible.
You just have to go to your My eBay > Account > Payment and remove all the payment methods that you have saved there. When you do that, the next time you make a purchase you will have to enter your payment method again, and you can choose which one you want to use.
You will need to check your payment method after every purchase, and remove it again if it got saved.
This even works with making offers, but you have to choose your payment method when you make the offer, you can't wait until the seller accepts it. But you can remove the saved payment immediately after you make the offer, and then it will only be saved for that particular offer, and you will need to enter a payment method again when you make the next one.

It is what it is. Why cut off your nose to spite your face? Make it easy on yourself...or not........
