Managed paymets? Why?

I've only been on ebay for 22+ years.  Why oh, why would I want to be forced to have ebay manage my payments?  For years I resisted paypal, then about 10 years ago ebay forced anything listed in the categories I sell "must" accept paypal, no bank wire.  I was off ebay for a long time, then slowly found my way back.  Now, out of left field they are forcing "manged payments" and no longer allowing us sellers to hold money in our own paypal account.  Oh, ebay just happened to raise it's fees.  But don;t worry, it's easier (but it costs seller freedom of choice and extra fees).

So now, on the 29th of December, without any previous warning they will deposit money into my bank account.  I guess this is what happens when a team of well paid young people make choices that affect millions of seller accounts... make it easy, charge them more, increase ebay's bottom line by another small margin.

I can understand how you are happy with the payment schedule.  But imagine after a years of this style of getting your money, they forced you to use a completely different method, then some years later they forced you to change yet again.  Well, hold on because history has a way of repeating itself.

Managed paymets? Why?

@natrigon , this should not be a surprise, eBay has been making this change for more than 3 years, and they were always clear that by the end of 2021, all sellers would be transitioned to managed payments.

As far as I can see, you have no active listings, no completed listings in the last 3 months, and no selling feedback for more than a year. So I don't think this is going to make much difference for your business in the long run.

I don't understand why you are wasting money on a store subscription, though.

Because PayPal was slow and not effecient and wanted too much money to continue doing it.

The fact you have a store subscription is likely what is triggering eBay to request/suggest/draft you into Managed Payments.

Fees on the eBay side have gone up from  10% to 12.55% but there is no longer the 2.9% being paid to PayPal. It works out to be about the same $$ amount given that the fees are for the entire payment (item price, shipping and sales tax, if any, paid by the buyer).

It might be best for you not to sell on eBay if you’re only selling intermittently. Selling locally for cash might be less hassle.

Managed paymets? Why?

The payments are not managed by eBay, but by Adyen.  I have been using this for over a year and have had no issues whatsoever.  I get may payouts weekly (by my request) and I don't have to pay anymore invoices.  Everything comes out of my payout and I have had no errors.

They did  not raise any fees.  PayPal took 2.9% plus 30 cents and eBay took (on average) 10%.  It is now combined and on average is 12.9% plus 30 cents.  No separate fees from PayPal and eBay, as it is all wrapped together and quite convenient.

Try it before you knock it.

Managed paymets? Why?

Hey thanks for the comment.  I used to sell high ticket items on ebay but I am mostly retired now.  With a store subscription the seller fee drops considerably, so I maintain the store for the few bucks a month.  That way when I sell something for thousands of dollars or more, the savings are considerable.

My problem is first they forced me to accept paypal, now they are forcing me not to accept paypal.  But you are right, I have not been selling on ebay much lately... and now that will continue for me.

with paypal I would be credited in minutes, now it takes days.  So it's slower for me.

Others are saying everyone will be transitioned to managed payments by the end of 2021, which is in a few days.  The seller fees for the categories I sold in "were" less than 10% and selling locally for cash is risky with high dollar items.  It is the forced change that I am not happy with.  Previously forced to only accept paypal, now forced not to accept paypal.

Managed paymets? Why?

and you are telling us this why?

according to the feedback on the seller ID for your posting here, your presence on eBay lately has been as a buyer and not a seller, so yes as a seller it's required to have a bank account for those funds to be deposited to now....buyers can still use PayPal....

As a seller it is YOUR responsibility to know what goes on , on the site you are using for buying/selling. Sellers were told 4 years ago, that Managed payments was the way it was going to be....

eBay is not responsible for your lack of knowledge about this site...

so NO this is not what "happens when a team of well paid young people make choices that affect millions of seller accounts... make it easy, charge them more, increase ebay's bottom line by another small margin."

This is what happens when a site makes changes to its payment system, makes those announcements to its users...but cannot make its users READ!

Yes, I'm venting because it makes me angry... just like your comment blaming me.  I can also see that your highest listed item is $36.  So it may not matter to you how a company you have supported for 22 years, yet again, forces a change to items you want to sell for $12,500 or more.  I can certainly understand that if selling something for $10 the old store seller fee of 9%, and the new seller fee of 15% may not matter to you.  Or it may not matter to you if they force you to deposit your money where they want it to go.

But you see Mr. Responsible mrdutch1001, the issue I have is ebay once forcing me use paypal, then forcing me the exact opposite, not to use ebay.  So you go ahead and use their "managed payment" and I hope it works well for you.  It does not work well for me, hence my comment stating that.

"now, out of left field"

LOL. They've been moving sellers over for THREE YEARS, and keeping us informed about it the whole time.

You are aware that they spun PayPal off as a separate company over 6 years ago, right? Well, they decided they could make more money teaming with someone else to process payments.

But sure, go ahead and complain about that "team of well-paid young people". How do you have any idea of the age of the people who made these decisions? And are you saying that even if eBay could make more money for their shareholders by switching, they should pass on the opportunity just so you won't have to deal with a little bit of change?

Wow.

I see the basic problem here - resistance to change of any kind.  That's not good and dooms anyone to frustration.

I won't get into the whys or wherefores of this incredibly over-discussed subject save to say you have two options here:  (1) Keep up or (2) Fail.

Yeah, like I replied to another "helpful" commenter, the difference here is when selling something for $50 with a high profit margin versus selling something for $10,000 or more, with a low profit margin.  Your "keep up or fail" option is so baseless and you don't have a clue as to my business acumen or holdings outside of my now minor presence on ebay.  Just because you choose to yield to ebay's "managed payment" system does not mean it does not negatively affect other's business model.  It is bad for me... why is that so hard to understand without hurling insults?  Lastly, I don't place ebay's shareholders on a pedestal, I care more about the health of my business.
