Managed payments

I have been a very casual ebay user since 2001. I buy and sell low to medium value items. I sold 2 items today for a whopping $8 and a message came up saying I needed to update my information and they were withholding my funds. Now, they are asking for EVERY personal piece of information that someone would need to breech my security. I've been reading some posts about this and it seems like this has been going on for over 2 years. Why no warning? Why not tell me so I had a chance to delete my listings? I loved PayPal because I would just let it build up and have a couple hundred bucks spending money every once in a while. It was basically my Christmas fund. Now they want the money to go directly into my bank account. Well, I DON'T WANT THE MONEY IN MY BANK ACCOUNT.  Plus, THEY ALREADY HAVE MY BANK ACCOUNT INFO. Anyway, the real question is can I still BUY on ebay without giving my SS # etc.? Are they strong arming me that way too? They can keep my $8. I'm done selling. But I would like to continue buying.

sure you can still buy. ebay loves buyers.   you just cant sell unless your in managed payments.  i would have thought they would have given you a little time to migrate to it . they are giving me a month and a half .

@da-ogz Yes you can buy on eBay using your PayPal account. MP is simply the new payment system for eBay, replacing PP for sellers. It has nothing to do with buyers at all, only affects sellers. Best of luck to you....

If you don't want to switch to managed payments, then you should remove anything you have listed currently because until you provide them with that information, you will not receive a dime. I absolutely hate managed payments, but this change over isn't something new whatsoever. How you are just now getting the memo is beyond me.

It is likely you did receive at least one email from MP about moving into the program but overlooked it or deleted it by accident.

The information MP asks for is needed so they can process your money.  MP is a basic money processing program and does not operate like PP does.  MP can only transfer your money to your checking account at a bank.  PP is not a bank, so that isn't an option sadly for sellers.

As to your SSN, that is required by the Federal government.  It is to satisfy the requirements of the 2020 updated Anti Money Laundering laws and the IRS requirements.

I can sure appreciate that if you have never heard of this program how and why you were so surprised.  I'd most certainly be upset as well.

I wish you luck in whatever you decide to do.

Depends if the site has their own money processing program.  Most sites similar to Ebay do have their own money processing programs and have had them for a long time.  And they do ask for SSNs.

So it depends on which sites you are talking about.  Smaller sites don't tend to have their own money processing programs so they would not be asking for the information.

I actually just messaged the buyer and told him that he had NOT paid for the item because ebay TOOK HIS money. I am an honest person and will ship items at a $20 loss. I deleted all my other items. I am not guilty of laundering $8 and I don't appreciate being treated as such. 20 years later...very disappointed.

Already did. Thanks. I really liked ebay 20 years ago. Also, PayPal was like my Christmas fund. I only sell for a hobby and a little extra spending money. Being treated like a criminal sucks. And I watched the fees go up to a point that I started calling this feebay. There are better(but less visible) options out there. Getting tired of packaging stuff up for a net $5 anyway. Still beats a rummage sale, but a little too invasive for me. Good luck.

BAD move.

Every single transaction on Ebay is a BUSINESS transaction, not a personal one.  Dragging your buyer into this is simply bad business.  Your buyer did pay.  You may not like how Ebay is handling that payment, but that does not mean your buyer did not pay because they most certainly did.

I get it that you don't like this program, you don't want to use it and it caught you by surprise.  But you are the seller and it is part of your JOB to resolve the issues before you.

It is NOT honest to tell your buyer they haven't paid when they have.  Ebay did not take the buyer's money, it is in YOUR MP account and you know what you have to do to get it to process, you just don't like it.  And you have every right not to like it.  We each make that choice.  But what we don't do is burden our customers with the issue you have or we have with Ebay.  🙄

Yes, I received a message 2 weeks ago to update my information but none of my information changed so I wasn't too concerned. Then today...we're keeping your money and if you don't let us steal your identity we will spank you even harder...basically. No explanation or reasoning...just threats. Made the already poor taste in my mouth from all the fees totally unpalatable. Thanks. I guess I'll still be buying from China when they say they are in Kentucky though anyway.

So your initial statement that you weren't aware wasn't quite accurate.  You did get notification it was time to move into MP but you chose to put it off or ignore it.  That email likely told you a date in which you had to register by.  At least that is what is usually in those emails.  It appears you passed that date today.

The explanation should have been in the email.  It was time for you to move into MP if you want to continue to sell on Ebay.  I know that isn't very pleasant for some and getting an ultimatum like that is unsettling at best.  Huge changes are very difficult to accept and deal with.  I get all that.  But putting it off only brings other problems like you experienced today.  Still writing your buyer and saying that was simply not the right thing to do and again it isn't factual as they buyer HAS PAID.

The fees are a different structure but not an increase for most.

The problems with sellers in China have nothing to do with your current problem.  I'm unsure as to why you even brought it up.

I have been a loyal eBay member since 1999. But this is it for me also. The shipping via USPS was bad enough but this new payment bullsxxx and wanting my ss# and bank account has made me decide that it’s just not worth it anymore.

Now, they are asking for EVERY personal piece of information that someone would need to breech my security.

Federal law requires Managed Payments to file a 1099K (which requires a taxpayer ID number) for any seller who reaches certain thresholds or be in violation of the law. Rather than risk noncompliance from a seller who refuses to give it after the fact, they require it up front.

PayPal started asking for SSN's back in 2008, also in response to the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008. Perhaps you did not remember that.

Why no warning? Why not tell me so I had a chance to delete my listings?

eBay has been warning sellers about Managed Payments for two years.

Now they want the money to go directly into my bank account

Correct, and they have been warning sellers about thsi for two years.

Plus, THEY ALREADY HAVE MY BANK ACCOUNT INFO.

They have your bank account information as a payment source for money that you send to them. They do not have permission to use that bank account for a different purpose - you must explicitly authorize that, as eBay has IMHO correctly recognized.

Anyway, the real question is can I still BUY on ebay without giving my SS # etc.

Yes.

Are they strong arming me that way too?

By "strong-arming" you mean "complying with federal law"? No, there is no federal law that requires eBay to report your SSN when you buy something; only when you receive payments through a payment processor like Managed Payments or PayPal.
