suspicious

this is a response from a seller::

Hi, I sent you this email regarding 2009 Chevrolet Impala LS.The vehicle has 121,151 miles ,ENGINE 3.5L 6-Cyl .The vehicle is in perfect condition with clear title, no accidents, no liens or loans and it has just been completely serviced. The engine runs very good and the automatic transmission shifts perfectly. The price for the vehicle is $800 (including delivery and handling to your address). I'm selling this vehicle because my child of only 26 years died 2 months ago in a bike accident, the vehicle belonged to my son and it brings me bad memories and that's the reason I want to sell it. Me and my husband travel a lot with our business and we want to make this deal through eBay Motors (Buyer Protection Program), so if you're interested in purchasing the vehicle just reply me your full name, full address, phone number and email address so I can notify eBay. Once that is done, they will contact you in the next hour to explain the entire procedure.

Re: suspicious

@pennte3

This is one of the oldest scam here on eBay. Cut all communication with this scammer.

That is not how eBay works. Likely the seller will send a phony "invoice" that appears to be from eBay but it is not, asking you to pay with gift cards to have the vehicle shipped to you for a free evaluation period.

eBay has no warehouse and does not ship vehicles. eBay does not handle such transactions or provide "vehicle protection orders". Scammers often promise those things, though. Any phone number you may receive on such an "invoice" does not connect to eBay, but to the scammer.

Anyone that asks you to purchase gift cards or to send card codes to them to complete a transaction is trying to take advantage of you. Anyone asking for a gift card is looking for a gift at your expense. Once anyone else knows the code, your money will be gone and you will have no recourse.

See here for some info about such scams:

https://pages.motors.ebay.com/buy/security/index.html

https://www.fbi.gov/scams-and-safety/common-fraud-schemes/online-vehicle-sale-fraud

The only way to purchase a vehicle on eBay is to sign in to eBay.com, find the vehicle on eBay and complete the checkout process on eBay. You may have to pay a deposit. Then you typically meet the seller to inspect the vehicle and pay the seller.

If you encountered an ad on another site, contact that site to have the ad removed. eBay is not involved with any ads listed on sites other than eBay itself.

Hope this helps!

Re: suspicious

Along with the previously mentioned, any correspondence will show to have been sent by a womans' name, and the personal address of this individual will be a gmail account.  The red flags abound!

Signs that it's a scam:

1.  A price well below normal price (so you think, "I'd better jump on this before someone else does").

2.  Being sold by a woman with a sob story ("poor woman in her grief doesn't know the true value, so I'd better jump on it before someone else does").  Sometimes the "lady" lost a child in accident and the vehicle reminds her of her son and she just wants it gone.  Sometimes she is going through a divorce and just wants the item out of her sight.  Sometimes she is in the military and being deployed and needs to sell it but not to worry, it's already at eBay shipping center in a container ready to ship.

3.  Begins on any site other than eBay (craigslist, facebook marketplace, offerup, letgo, etc) but "seller" wants to "complete sale" on eBay.  NO legitimate deal begins on another site and ends on eBay.  Ever.

4.  Wants you to pay with gift cards.  Once you give the card numbers, your money is gone and cannot be traced.

5.  Free shipping to your house, five days to look it over, and free shipping back if you don't want it (uh, the shipping would be more than what the asking price is, do the math).

I am glad your scam radar went off. Please stop all correspondance with the scammer and report them to the website where you found the ad (i.e. "flag" it if it's on craigslist).

Re: suspicious

Doesn't sound right? Let me ask this.  Where on planet Earth do you think you can buy a 2009 Impala for 800 bucks with free shipping? What is there to think about considering this is a blatant scam.

Any car dealer in town would hand them far, far more than 800 bucks just for driving it down there. So ask yourself why would someone even bother with an online sale in which they're essentially giving it away for free.

And somewhere at this moment someone or multiple someones are firing off gift cards whose money will be gone forever with not a prayer of ever seeing a penny of it again.

Re: suspicious

I saw a big-screen TV at Walmart the other day, really cheap like $20, so I had to get it before someone else grabbed it. The only thing was Target was going to "handle the transaction for my security". OK, I trust Target so  I follow the purchase instructions that say go to CVS and buy Apple gift cards to send in. That sounds a little fishy but a $500 TV for $20? I gotta do it, PLUS they ship it to me for free and I can watch it for 30 days, then send it back for FREE if I'm not satisfied. I sent off the gift cards to Target, but a week later have not received my TV.

TARGET IS SUCH A SCAM!!
