Hi Everyone! This month's chat you’ll have an opportunity to talk with the eBay Ads Team. The theme of the chat is about advertising solutions available to help you drive sales. Advertising solutions like Promoted Listings Standard and Promoted Listings Advanced BETA. Come join the chat on Nov 9th at 1PM PST!

Edit: Thanks for joining us for the Monthly Chat with eBay Staff and the Promoted Listings Team.

The chat thread will remain open until 2 PM PT at which point we'll close it from additional responses. After that time, we'll continue to work on responding to any queries that might still be unanswered.

To post your question, click Reply in the lower right corner of this post, type your question, and hit submit between 1-2 PM Pacific Time. The format of our chat mirrors the format of our Community Discussion Boards, where each post will appear in the thread chronologically. The (specialist name) and Community Team will review each question as it comes in, and will quote the original question in our reply. This quote and the reply will appear later in the thread, so just keep scrolling down to see our answers.

As a reminder, we want (specialist name) to be able to get to as many members as possible during the allotted hour, so we have a few things to ask of you:
Keep on topic
Scroll through the list of questions to see what has already been asked to decrease chances of redundancy
Keep the message/question simple and no more than one to two items. If you include multiple questions in a post, please be aware that they may not be addressed during the chat and (specialist name) will do their best to follow-up with it after the chat has closed

Missed the chat? Send your questions to the podcast by calling 888-723-4630 or email us at podcast@ebay.com and maybe your questions will make it on the air! Or listen to past episodes while you wait for next month!”

Re: Monthly Chat - November 9th at 1:00 pm PT

Hi ads_team@ebay thanks for taking the time to be here today!

I’ve been seeing increasing use of scrolling ad carousels on listing pages and have a question about how these impressions are counted. In this example photo, there were over 100 total ad slots including carousels, about 60 immediately viewable without scrolling right in the carousels.

Seller Hub defines impressions as “The number of times your promoted listings have appeared on any eBay site.”

If my listing was in slot #79 would there still be a Promoted Listings impression counted in reports even if the buyer never actually scrolled right to bring it into view on their screen?

Similarly in search, if the promoted version of my listing appears on page 2 for a given search, but the buyer never navigates to page 2, would that still be counted as a Promoted Listing impression since it technically appeared “on any eBay site” as part of that search?

Re: Monthly Chat - November 9th at 1:00 pm PT

In his segment on search and ads at eBay Open, Pravesh Katyal said there would be changes to how ads are displayed “coming soon” and that instead of seeing promoted and organic interspersed together we will see “clearly demarcated ad placements such as the top of search ad placement, middle of search ad placements as well as bottom of search ad placements. Each of these ad placements will have a number of ad slots. Ads will be shown in a continuous and clearly demarcated manner. We think that makes it much easier for buyers to identify and to interact with the ads, and more importantly it gives an ability for sellers and advertisers to target specific ad placements. ”

Any idea what those top, middle and bottom of search ad placements will look like?

I’ve noticed modules like this one in searches for certain shoes that highlight listings with Authenticity Guaranteed, is this similar to what we can expect but featuring Promoted Listings instead?

How will sellers be able to specifically target top, middle, and bottom of search placements?

Re: Monthly Chat - November 9th at 1:00 pm PT

Back in June GM Ad Elisabeth Rommel told MediaPost there would be new ad products coming in the second half of 2022. One of those she called Promoted Display ads that would be a CPC product shown on the  “View Items” page.  She said Promoted Display ads would be tested it in September, with the goal to roll out the ad unit in a closed beta during the second half in 2022.

Has testing begun for Promoted Display ads? What exactly is meant by the View Items page? Would that be on the store page now that the “see other items” links are pointing to store pages?

There was also a closed beta invitation for Offsite Google Ads CPC in July that was open to sellers for a few days and then all traces of it disappeared from seller hub and FAQ pages. Is this ad product still in testing?

@valueaddedresource That's a great question and we appreciate the enthusiasm for the upcoming changes to ad placement. We’re constantly testing and learning to identify solutions and placements that will help boost listing visibility and drive sales. Since we’re still very much testing, we’re unable to really share future placements at this time. - The eBay Ads team

Re: Monthly Chat - November 9th at 1:00 pm PT

The Promoted Listing FAQ says that the promoted and organic versions of listings will not appear together in the same search.

Can the same promoted listing appear in more than one placement on the same set of search results?

No. An individual listing will only appear once in the same set of search results. If your listing is promoted, it will either appear as a promoted listing or an organic listing.

However, I consistently see promoted and organic versions of the same listings displayed when search is sorted by price or time.

Why does that only apply to Best Match sort and why doesn't the FAQ specify that?

Or is it supposed to apply for all sort types and these results are in error?

@valueaddedresource Thank you for your questions. Yes, in the first example that would be counted as an impression. Anytime a listing is populated into an ad carousel it would be considered an impression. To answer the second part of your question, listings appearing are only counted as an impression if the buyer navigates to the second page. We hope this helps.

Re: Monthly Chat - November 9th at 1:00 pm PT

Promoted Listings Advanced seems to be creating a lot of situations where the top results are not relevant, possibly due to keyword spamming.

It's especially frustrating when you search for a specific brand only to be shown competing brands (that presumably you aren't interested in or else you would have searched for them.)

nike (2).png

It's a poor buyer experience and I would assume the brands are probably not happy about it either.

What is eBay doing to combat keyword spamming/hijacking that forces irrelevant results to the top?

@valueaddedresource We’re constantly testing different experiences to find what’s best for our buyers and sellers, especially as our advertising tools grow and the landscape changes. eBay will notify eligible sellers when new features or experiences are widely available to use.

Re: Monthly Chat - November 9th at 1:00 pm PT

This one may be more of a suggestion than a question but - since sellers can buy their way in to Promoted Listings, why not let them buy their way out of PL too? Maybe eBay could offer an "ad free subscription" where sellers could pay a fee to opt out of having competitor listings cross promoted on their listing pages?

Re: Monthly Chat - November 9th at 1:00 pm PT

Hi @valueaddedresource thanks for your question. A number of factors come into play when determining where a seller's listing will surface in the search results. They include:

  • Buyer traffic or demand for a certain item
  • Seasonality
  • Changes to the competitive landscape (e.g., other sellers start or stop promoting items in the same category and/or make significant changes to their CPC bids)
  • General platform improvements, quality thresholds, and routine testing
