Militaria Collector's Corner

Thanks to eBay and special kudos to both Robin and Daphne for adding this thread. I hope it will be a good place for users to post ?? about their military-related items. There are many readers who have the expertise to answer your questions about what something is, so don't be shy! Thanks, again!

I don't want to break any rules, but is it OK to ask questions for research purposes? I am not selling, but do wish to locate information.

"Entered" before I asked my question. Need to go to bed. Question: 1898 German souvenir books, photographs of people in Victorian garb and horses and buggies, walking in plazas by famous buildings (Berlin, Munich): I have never seen these before. How long were they published? Any military (WWII) interest? Any recent auctions? not that I can ever bring myself to sell anything. It is more of a history lesson. Thanks.

camerondelavan: There's some interest, but it really depends on the description, time of year, etc. - there doesn't seem to be persistent interest. I can help you somewhat on the German items (as can most of the posters here). But you asked a good question in the first post. I'm working with another researcher (2 different topics, but a common link) and am trying to find Info on an Andrew Bain (formerly Royal Irish Constabulary and Electrical Engineers-Royal Engineers) who served in the 1895-96 Ashanti Expedition, Boer War, and Northern Nigeria in 1906. We both only have about 3 pages of bio. data on him and no photos and the info is very sketchy. Obviously this isn't ebay related and there's no selling involved, just locating info. (We've both pretty much exhausted the traditional forms of research). Good question! Ebay's changing and maybe we can do this now.

tsa-li: Thank you for your kind response. I'm afraid I can't help you; I know nothing about your fellow or the two organizations. I was able to have some German names translated today, so I have a bit more information than yesterday. Of the six books, five are hard-bound in a red cover with gold-gilding, and one is blue and black with gild. Three are signed by the traveler and dated one day apart in July 1896: Coeln (Cologne?), Kjobenhavn (Copenhagen?) and Erinnerung an das National-Denkmal, Niederwald und umgebung (Bingen and surrounding neighborhood?). The much larger Munich book contains copies of actual photographs, plus etchings, each with type-writer title, dated from 1895-1898, all with "Ferd. Finsterlin Munchen" stamped on them, some with "Wilhelm Keller, Munchen" stamped on them. The Berlin book contains etchings with German and English titles. And, "Die Wartburg und ungebung" (is the city Wartburg in English?) contains etchings of buildings and countryside. They all appear to have been collected by the same traveler.

I am curious as to when these types of souvenir books were first printed and when last printed. Have you any idea? Thank you.

camerondelavan: You've got the locations pretty right. Wartburg is the castle (of Martin Luther fame) at Eisenach. Off-hand, I would say that these would stir interest on the German ebay (and command a higher winning bid). Without looking at yours, I could say that ones similar to this began making their appearance in the 1840's and continued up until the time of WWI. The economical colapse of Germany after WWI pretty much ended this style. Advances in technology changed these books so they're now considered quite "quaint". If you get real interested, I can probably get you some addresses in Germany to make further inquiries from specialists. Off-hand you haven't mentioned anything that would make these applicable to militaria even though collectors of militaria might be the ones most interested--probably followed by travel and family history specialists.

Good Afternoon -

Is there anyone out there who can identify the origin of the below bugle's symbol (crowned eagle with initials)?

Much research has produced no results. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Hi. I just aquired this jacket and was hoping that someone might know a little about it. I am clueless. I was hoping to put it on Ebay. Any suggestions, comments, info are appreciated. It is new with tags and the tag reads
48R
2122-C1
55% Polyester 45% Wool
8405-01-279-5649
0019AA
Made in USA WPL 4818
I looked up the WPL # but it says it was Issued in 8/98 like everything else I looked up.
Thanks!
Barb

Your USMC uniform jacket if fairly recent (if you said 1998, then I'd believe it). I think the last photo is supposed to be the button (blackened with the Marine eagle, globe, & anchor). The plain button below is supposed to be like that because the waist belt goes over it. If you look inside the jacket, there should be another tag inside an interior pocket on the left, it should give you further info. These sell fairly well overseas.

Thank you TSA! It does have the tag on the inside with pressing instructions. I had no idea what service even wore it. Isn't that aweful? And my Dad was in the Navy...Shame on me. I appreciate your help. I will list it internationally but don't like the idea of it being in another country.

Hi, Anyone have a clue what this Korean order would be? The only info that I have so far is a translation of the text on the reverse which has Korea, Merit and the number.

Thanks
