Ebay Authentication Service Damaged a Designer Bag!

I sell a number of designer items.  I sold a Christian Dior Book Tote which I personally purchased from the boutique and is 100% authentic.  The book tote somehow failed ebay authentication!  If this wasn't bad enough where I lost a legitimate sale, ebay sent the Book Tote back to me with the handles bent inside the bag!  The tote came back completely damaged and misshapen!  Now after sending tons of photos of the tote and showing how damaged it is because they sent it in a box that was too small, they refuse to do anything about it and simply said it did not pass authentication!  This is outrageous.  This is an item worth thousands of dollars and no matter what, under no circumstances do they have the right to damage a bag!  I'm basically getting the impression that they don't care the handles were bent backwards and forced inside the bag because it did not pass authentication process.  I have in my possession an authentic bag worth over $3k which is damaged by ebay.  Please help!!!!  What can I do?

Thank you for the feedback on this @roselily_02 ! One of our biggest goals is to ensure the authenticity of all items on the platform and we are continuing to explore new methods of authentication to further stay a step ahead with verification. The authentication process involves a multi-point authentication inspection, where every bag is handled with the utmost care which we take very seriously.

More about the process can be located via link  Authenticity Guarantee for Handbags.

We rely heavily on our community's feedback to make notable changes that make the experience better for all Handbag enthusiasts. This issue has been shared, and a teammate will be reaching out directly to speak with you in regards to your experience.

Thank you again for your feedback!

@roselily_02

Although it sounds like ebay is working with you on the complaint about the damaged bag, I have some suggestions/constructive criticism to offer on future listings. (These suggestions also apply to your other current listings.)

Without knowing a lot about who the experts are in ebay's authenticity guarantee program, my concerns are valid even on a general basis.

Some of those of us who have hung out on the fashion board, old clothing, shoes, accessories board, this new handbag (formerly known as luxury handbags) board and other purse blogs for years have seen thousands of fakes, thousands of authentic bags and hundreds of mistakes made by professional authentication services.

Re the pro services, there are different types:

  • Some are one-man/woman operations in which one person tries to authenticate multiple brands, ultimately being a jack-of-all-trades, master of none. While they may be experienced in one or two brands, trying to know them all leads to mistakes, comparisons of items by comparing pictures. (The problem is that unless one is expert, it can be difficult to verify that the comparison is being made to an authentic item. Mistakes HAVE been made when the comp was to a fake!
  • Some operations are done by computers. AI (artificial intelligence) presumably collects data and uses a database of details, styles, serial numbers, date codes, fonts, stitching, materials, hardware, etc. The problems arise from a computer not knowing or recognizing that various factories use different fonts and serial numbers and what may be correct for a bag from plant #1 can prove something fake if from plant #2. My own files contain 177 examples of mistakes made by AI.
  • Some operations have brand specialists, meaning that they do different brands, each brand being authenticated by a real expert in that brand. IMO, that type of company seems to have the most accurate authentications.
  • Some items have been so "well faked" by the counterfeiters that even a pro can't always accurately authenticate from pictures and the item(s) needs to be send to the pro to examine in person.

But in every case and in every listing whether it's part of ebay's authenticity guarantee program or not, listings MUST have the pictures necessary for a buyer and for an authenticator to verify authenticity before a purchase is made.

DISCLAIMER: I'm not expert in the brands the OP sells.

And that's where my constructive criticism comes in.  I looked at the OP's listings and NONE of them have the necessary pictures for anyone to verify authenticity.

LV bags need to show clear closeups of date codes, heat stamps, made in stamps, hardware, etc. Although I confess to not opening every listing, I didn't see a single date code and most listings didn't have enough of the right pictures that a knowledgeable person could even get an idea of authenticity.

Chanel items were missing holograms and most of the other pictures were too blurry or angled to judge authenticity. The markings on the backs of the jewelry need to be straight on and crystal clear.

Whether the Dior item in question (which can't be found) or any of the other items listed are authentic or not, I don't know but if I were looking for any of the items listed, I'd hit the back button and find a different seller with better quality and the right pictures.

Keep in mind that should one of your buyers file a SNAD dispute claiming a non-authentic item, without pictures in the listing that prove authenticity, you or the buyer wouldn't even be able to get reassurance of authenticity from an outside source.

Sometimes buyers come to the boards afraid they received a fake or sellers come to the board after being accused of selling a fake. We look at the listing in question and either reassure them that they received or sold a genuine item or we confirm the suspicions.

Yet in the case of your listings, neither can be determined.

I hope your current issue is resolved but please consider the advice I've given.

Re: Ebay Authentication Service Damaged a Designer Bag!

I am currently disputing the return of a Louis Vuitton bag that was authenticated, description and condition confirmed by Authenticator but the Buyer claims there is a bubble and odor coming from the back of the hang tag.  Buyer also claims tag is bent but you can clearly see from my listing photographs that this is not the case.  I am so concerned that either the Buyer is scamming me and sending back a counterfeit that they damaged in place of my real bag or that the Authenticator damaged it.  Judging from all of the posts I've read, I may now be stuck with a bag that left my home in pristine condition but is coming back damaged...if it is even the bag I sold!  Apparently the Buyer sends the bag back to the Authenticator now and my only hope is that the Authenticator informs eBay that the Buyer damaged the tag.  I have learned an expensive lesson here, I cannot trust eBay or its practices so I've removed all of my listings and will not do business on the platform again.  I have sold on eBay for years without issue but never realized that these types of things could happen and that there is absolutely no protection for Sellers.  Seems ludicrous considering eBays profits rely on Sellers.  I do intend on filing in small claims court depending on what exactly is returned to me.  Perhaps its all a ploy by the Buyer because they simply changed their mind...who knows!

Re: Ebay Authentication Service Damaged a Designer Bag!

Wow I am sorry to hear about your damaged bag!! thats unacceptable! I recently sold a Chanel bag that previously had been already authenticated by Entrupy.com and eBay failed the authentication! Tried to tell the buyer that the bag had been dyed? There is no such thing.

It's very frustrating and makes me doubt eBays authenticity team. Very concerning..

There are many reports of mistakes by Entrupy. AI doesn't work if they don't adjust their algorithms when they make mistakes.

I wouldn't trust Entrupy if they were the last authentication company in the world.

Re: Ebay Authentication Service Damaged a Designer Bag!

My Louis Voiutton bag was returned to me today stating could not confirm authenticity. The bag was in perfect shape prior to send with pictures. They didnt state why it didnt pass, the bag holding the bag came back with a green stain on it. The inside of the Neo Neo bag all four corners were pulled apart the stitching and not fixed. The bag cost over 2K wad just looking to get some of my $$ back and now they have destroyed it. A designer had bag destroyed by authenticator.

Re: Ebay Authentication Service Damaged a Designer Bag!

take ebay to small claims court.Obviously there are people in the authentication service damaging peoples goods.

After enough court cases, ebay will have to change their policy

I wouldn't trust eBay or any of their partners to authenticate the remnants on the bottom of my boot of the cow patty I stepped in earlier today.

Unfortunately, the listing has been removed so we can't see it, but according to your listing (as shown in completed), the bag was "brand new" and you sold it for $700?

Methinks ebay was correct in rejecting that bag:

Re: Ebay Authentication Service Damaged a Designer Bag!

That is reall terrible andno way wil ebay accept ANY responsibility! I had no idea this new service had been trotted out and only found out when i printed a shipping label & thought **bleep**????

it takes YEARS to become an authenticator and we all know ebay wont hire anyone over 30 SO WHO THE HELL IS DOING THE AUTHENTICATIONS???? What are their qualifications?  and here in australia we have ONE authentication warehouse, with a backlog of weeks (not days) and some buyers have managed to get a refund for item not arriving.... then keeping the item when it FINALLY does show up! GREAT WORK EBAY!!!! Id rather burn my bags that let someone cheat me out of both bag and money!!! Mine are all authentic, been collecting at least one a year since i was 18. im now mid 60s so ive got a few! we had floods a little while ago and also a few years before that.... do i save the Louis & Chanels or do i find the key for the file cupboard and look for all the paperwork pertaining to my secret hoard??? the bags won so now only the odd rct is floating around but as i bought EVERY **bleep** BAG IN a different store in whatever country i was in, i KNOW theyre authentic but ebay wants some person, whose name or credentials i am not afforded, to decide if theyre counterfeit or not! someone who most likely doesnt even OWN a bag of this quality BECAUSE THEYRE TOO **bleep** YOUNG TO AFFORD IT! oh.... and i have to post it to a facillity, over 1000kms away, with a backlog of items that will take WEEKS to clear & who refuse to accept ANY responsibility for damage to item or reputation when they get it wrong!!! Ebay has lost its collective **bleep** mind!!!! Ill keep selling all my other items but what was to be a suppliment to my retirement will end up on marketplace or some other platform NOT EBAY!!!!
