Help with Sample ID (Amethyst?)

Got this from an uncle that did some exploring in Alaska 40 years ago. Is it Amethyst? I'm going to Yellowstone and will be in Livingston MT. They have a rock/gem store where you can buy a bag of stones and sort through them. Sounds like fun so we will try that. I was going to offer the owner this sample and just wondered if was worth anything? Perhaps pay for my bag of rocks? We obviously know nothing about gemstones.

Yes, it is amethyst. Some amethyst is worth more than other as specimens, especially if you can tie it to a particular source. I cannot tell from your photo, however, whether there is anything special about your piece.
