There are times where you may want to provide a discount to your customer by issuing a partial refund after purchase. In these instances, you can return a portion of the payment to your buyer directly through the transaction in PayPal.

  1. Log into PayPal.
  2. Click Activity at the top of the page.
  3. Click on the payment you want to refund.
  4. Click Refund this payment.
  5. For Refund Amount enter the amount you want to refund, and click Continue.
  6. Review the information and click Issue refund.
  7. If you're refunding an item within 60 days of payment, PayPal will credit your fees automatically. After 60 days, PayPal is unable to refund your transaction fees.

Some considerations to be aware of:

  • If an Item Not Received request has been opened, a refund should be issued directly through the request. A partial refund would not be an option for an item your buyer did not receive.
  • If a Return Request has been opened, both the full and partial refund options are available within the request flow.
  • Outside of an eBay Money Back Guarantee request, a full refund should only be processed through the Cancel Transaction flow.
  • Refunds issued through an eBay Money Back Guarantee request or the Cancel Transaction process will automatically receive a credit of any related Final Value Fees.
  • A partial refund can lead to a defect if there are no eBay messages between you and your customer that show the reason for the refund.
