Please Help Decipher Old German Script

Hi everyone,

Can someone please help me decipher the old German script on this box lid cover? I'd most appreciate it! What I have so far is:

Diese XXXX erhielt(?)

der Vater des XXXXXXXX XXXX

XXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXX von

Friedrich den GrosBen

in XXXXXXXXX 1774

I know the name above basically stands for: Frederick the Great (former King of Prussia in the 18th Century). The 3 images posted are all I have for now. Thank you all for your time!

I think another word could be: Basch(?) but I'm not 100% sure?

Ok, the first few words appear to be: "Diese Dose erhielt der Vater des"

Translation: "This box was given to the father of "

@jpgharv29,

I played around with google translate, and came up with this:

Diese Dose erhielt

This box was received by

der Vater des jetzigen Kel-

the father of the current cel-

lermeister Freisch von

lar master Freisch from

Friedrich den Grosßen

Frederick the Great

in Sanssouci 1774

in Sanssouci 1774

that is assuming that the last word on the second line is part of the first word on the third line, making kellermeister which means "cellar master", or "wine master". I'm not sure about the spelling of the name of the kellermeister, either.

Anyway, this was the only way I could make sense of the word starting with a capital letter K, and the next word which doesn't have a capital letter, although most of the other major words do.

One problem, though ... Frederick the Great died in 1786. (Update, when I wrote this, I thought the date on the box was 1794, but it appears to be 1774.)

Oh so the date must be 1774 as OP originally thought.

Oh, I missed that ... thanks for pointing it out.

I will update my previous post, and try to correct it without making it nonsense.

"One problem, though ... Frederick the Great died in 1786."

Rita gave the year of 1794, but I'm 99.9% sure it's dated 1774.

I thank you so much for trying to help. It's been a bit frustrating especially since I don't have the object in-hand and cannot provide better images or even look at the piece in close detail. I can only work with the images I have......for now.

So, it appears to possibly read line-by-line...

Diese Dose erhielt(?)

der Vater des jetzigen(?) Kel(?)

lermeisters(?) Basch(?) von

Friedrich den Grossen

in Sanssouci 1774

This word you wrote "Freisch" to my eye appears to be Basch or Masch. It's only five letters and not seven.

Here's a "better" image. Five letters, with the first possibly being a: B or M (Basch or Mosch)???

ChatGPT says it's Basch so I think you have your translation.   Would love to see the box.
