Mythological Creature or god identification Mythology

Hi all.  Looking for help identifying the creature on this pair of bookends.  I just don't know what ~ who ~it is.  But, I do know there is someone out there with the knowledge and resources to help me.

Thanks in advance for all your time and effort.

Perhaps it's a crab...?   Claws.  That particular "design" that you see on the underside of a lot of crabs.

Thank you for the suggestion.  That makes sense.

It reminds me a little of this sort of thing, but I'm probably wrong:

Or maybe Tibetan??

I can see claw-like patterns, but I'm not seeing the crab.

It does seem to have some of the same

characteristics of some the Tibetan creatures!

Is there anything on the back, or base, that might provide some additional clues?

Are they wood with applied metal? Solid metal? Maker's marks on the bottom/back? Numbers? Emblems? Magnetic?

Never seen the "underside" of a crab. Never looked. Taking your word for it. 🙂

I see an amalgamation of sea creatures, turtle, crab, octopus. Octopus tenacles with rows of suckers was first seen for me. (A rare species with 7 tenacles, the septapus.)

Interesting point about the suckers, I hadn't thought of that. Perhaps it's the legendary kraken:

Typical crab shell, underside, with the sort of pattern I was seeing in OP's item.  In some species, you can determine the gender by the appearance of this pattern.

BUT I hasten say it was only the claw-like elements and that vague pattern that made me guess "crab."  It may not be an animal at all, or it may be the elusive Tibetan Septapus.   Smiley Very Happy

That is a good resemblance.

The bookend is wooden.  The art work is a separate piece of material that is attached with the decorative tacks.   I'm not sure of the material.  Possibly some sort of heavy fabric or paper with a coating? There isn't a mark that I can find.  I'm wondering if these are an art project?    From the avocado green maybe they date back to the late 1960's or 70's?
