Europa C&O Nr. 330 Freiburg im Breisgau 1 Kreuzer Silver Date 1712

22 Julio 2017 - Greetings to all coin collectors where-ever you may be!  Heron is extremely pleased to report C&O coin Number 330.   This item has been on Heron's 'want list' since early 1981.   Yes, it was a long time on the list but now that item has the 'line drawn' through it.   Heron is pleased to share this happy event with fellow coin collectors and also attempt to keep this coin chatting place alive a bit longer?

The Coin: Freiburg im Breisgau 1 Kreuzer Silver Full date 1712 - 15mm.

[Note:  This 'Freiburg' is not to be confussed with Freiburg im Switzerland.  There are apparently many folks not familiar with Freiburg im Breisgau and they confuse it with Freiburg aka Fribourg in Switzerland.  As a matter of fact, this very item was advertised as a Swiss coin.  However, it is not.]

Obverse:  Rabenkopf at center.

                     Legend:  'MON.FRIBUR.BRISG.1712.'

Also included in obverse legend is a numeral 1 at 12 oclock.  This

numeral 1 is 'connected' with the "K" located at 6 oclock.  In other woids,

the denomination of 1 K[reuzer] is spliced into the legends! Neat].

Reverse:  At center is Christian Cross in shield.

                    Legend "GLORIA IN EXCELCIS DEO".

                    A 'K' is located at 6 oclock.

A Condensed History:

1120 - Formed as city and chartered by Duke of Zahringen.

1218 - to Urach.

1230 - To Freiburg local Counts.

1327 - First coins minted & issued by Freiburg im Breisgau.

1368 - To Haus Hapsburger of Austria.

1377 - The cities of Freiburg im Breisgau, Basel Switzerland, and Kolmar formed

an alliance known as Genossenschaft des Rappenpfennigs.  This alliance

lasted until end of the 16th century.

Heron ponders if this was the beginning of the word Rappen to be

eventually used in modern Swiss coinage?  Always something to research

in this great hobby of coin collecting.

1739 - Freiburg im Breisgau coinage ended.

1806 - Freiburg transferred to Baden.  [During French occupation].

Notes:

Translation of Rabenskopf.   Raven's Head in English.  A local 'emblem' of

                       Freiburg im Breisgau.

Silver mines discovered in Mount Schauinsland, near Freiburg im Breisgau, made

Freiburg im Breisgau one of the richest cities in Europe.   Until the silver was

exterminated.

**Yes, another happy time for elHeron.  Adding an interesting coin to the

Central & Oest small accumulation is always a fun situation.  Especially when the item has been on the 'want list' for over 36 years!   And onward we travel along the

Pathway to the Celestial Heavens, always searching for items as we proceed along the 'Way'.   [A slightly different version than that of Lao Tzu!  He probably wont mind].

A super great hobby is this coin collecting thing.  Opinion**

Europa C&O Nr. 330 Freiburg im Breisgau 1 Kreuzer Silver Date 1712

Nice find!  Especially as a mis-identified find.

I visited a college friend in this Freiburg (the Badischer one) on my first trip outside of North America in 1980.  Pretty town that I think is a gateway to the Schwarzwald (Black Forest).

The reverse legend GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO is an interesting one.  I remember seeing it also on a medieval kreuzer of Strasbourg.  I think they share in common being free cities in the former HRE?  Or maybe cities where the bishop is also the civic ruler?

I found this image of the same type on eBay:

Europa C&O Nr. 330 Freiburg im Breisgau 1 Kreuzer Silver Date 1712

28 Julio 2017 - hola TDZ - your post of 24 Julio 0808 Hrs:

Yes, the image you found of the Freiburg im Breisgau with 'Rabenkopf' is similar to Heron's 1 K coin.   There apparently were many different dies used to mint this issue.  Por Ejemplo:  Heron's Freiburg im Breisgau has a larger Raven's Head engraved within a circle of 'dots'.   Perhaps that was the beginning of an era of experimentation with 'dots' inna circle?

Yes, Freiburg im Breisgau was a famous University town.

Yes, Freiburg im Breisgau is in the Schwartzwald.   [Actually near the town from whence a Heron anchester departed enroute to Penn's Wood].

Yes, there are several coins in Heron's small accumulation with the phrase,

"Gloria in Excelsis Deo".   There is a longer 'legend' version writ on some larger denomination coins where the die engraver had more 'space' for legends.

Yes, during Heron's many hours of research of Holy Roman Empire coin issues he has discovered that in older times the Holy Roman Emperor would indeed elevate the local 'bishop' to a secular title such as Duke or Prince.   Apparently quite a few of the HRE 'Stadts' and Bishoprics were combined under one ruler, primarly being the Bishop.

And then along came Napoleon I !   He took apart the system and secularized almost every area invaded and occupied by the French.   An interesting period of history and coinage also.

Thank you for your comentario.   Every bit helps keep this coin chatting place alive!

Regardos.
