Europa C&O #374: Groningen & Ommelanden - Duit - Copper - Full Date 1770.

Cinco de Julio 2018:  Greetings to all coin collectors, where-ever you might be!

Heron is pleased to report acquisition of Euro Central & Oest coin issuing entities number 374.   This is a nice dated Copper coin.  Date is 1770.   Searching for obscure entities of Europa Zentral is shirly a lot of fun!   We never know what can be found. Especially now-a-days with eBay and a lot of innernet informacion available.

 

The Coin: Groningen & Ommelanden- Duit-Copper-1770-22mm. dia.

 

Obverse: Crowned Coat of Arms of Groningen & Ommelanden.

 

Reverse:        GRON

                              EN

                         OMMEL

                           1770               Note: Mint Mark at 12 oclock.

 

Short History:

1581 - Groningen & Ommelanden became part of the 7 United Provinces Neth.

1588- These Provinces became a Confederacy.

1793- Occupied by French Armee.

1813-  These provinces regained independence from France.

1815- Vienna Congress established 'low countries' as new Kingdom Netherlands.

 

Note: History of this area is extremely complex.  

Note: Groningen is a Stad.  Stad = city.

Note: Ommelanden is land area surrounding Groningen.

Note: Ommelanden translates to "surrounding area".

Note: A coin mint was located in Groningen.  A coin dated 1460 shown in book,

           "The Early Dated Coins of Europe 1234 to 1500".

            This coin dated 1460 had Groningen Mint Mark.

Note: With this acquisition of Groningen & Ommelanden elHeron now has 

            a coin from all 7 United Provinces.  The list: Holland, Overijssel, Zeeland,

            Gelderland, Groningen, Utrecht, and Frisia [aka WestFrisia].

Note: These land areas were, at various times, part of the Holy Roman Empire.

** Yes, as the search for coins continues we  are having a lot of fun.  Finding

     coins from somewhat 'obscure' places is neat!  This entity was NOT on Heron's      want list.  These 'low country' coins are found 'at random'.  Sorda

     serendipitously.   However, a nice Copper dated coin from Europa Zentral

     is always welcome into Heron's small accumulation!  Great Fun Indeed!**
