Europa C&O #361- Margraviate Brandenburg-Kustrin Groschen 1544.

23 Marzo 2018 - Greetings to all coin collectors, where you might be.  Heron can see that the old Coin Chatting place is gradually dying.  However, Heron will continue to 'report' small treasure finds for those few remaining viewers.   This report is for Europa Central & Oest coin number 361.   Yes, moving along if not swiftly.  Coin #361 is an interesting item.   As most coins are!

The Coin: Margraviate Brandenburg-Kustrin, Groschen, full date 1544,

                    Silver, 21.5mm dia.

Obverse: At center a portrait of Johann II, der Margrave.

                   Legend: IOHAN.D.G.MAR.BRANDEN.ET.STE+.

Reverse: At center Brandenburg Eagle with shield of Hohenzollern.

                   Legend: GROSS.AR.IOHAN.MAR.BRAN.1544.

A Short History:

1535 - Margraviate Kustrin created from territory of Brandenburg.

Created for Johann II of Brandenburg.

             Kustrin was 12,500 square KM.

1571 - Margrave Johann II dies without male heir.  Kustrin reverts to Brandenburg.

Note: Heron said a 'short history' and it was short, amounting to 26 years.

Note: Brandenburg-Kustrin was member of Holy Roman Empire.

Note: The name Margrave [Germanian Margraf] was originally a medieval

title for the Military Commander assigned to maintain defense of a

border province of the Holy Roman Empire.

** Yes, another serendipitious treasure find!   Heron was searching for a Bremen und Werden [also seen spelt Bremen und Verden] coin and was perusing over 100 Brandenburg 'listings'.   Whilst perusing Brandenburger items Heron saw a

Brandenburg-Kustrin.  Heron reviewed his 'want list'.  Nada re Kustrin.  So, this turned out to be another 'lucky' find by accidente.  Central & Oest Europa #361 added to the small accumulation.   This is one of the super fun factors of world coin collecting.  We just never know when or where another small 'treasure' will appear.  And at a moderate cost!   A super fun hobby for a lifetime. **
