If you paid thru paypal, you may be able to look thru paypal records to find the seller name.   But, after 3 years, don't expect the seller to remember or to have kept a written copy of the code.

Your best bet is to take it to an Apple Store and see if they can help you.

You will need to find the user name you purchased from.

Also they may not be able to help you, Just saying...

You should be able to reinstall the OS easily, unless the hacker somehow got physical access to your machine and used the terminal to change certain security parameters.

Your going to have to search on line for how to recover that.  People don't even know their passwords from a week ago much less years.

The thing is, I have all the info, including the  receipt and product # and listing etc.  Apple sends me to eBay, and then what?  I have the seller, etc, but how and where to contact?  I’ve already messaged the seller - no response.  I bought the MBP in 2019.

Thanks for the help.  I guess I’m just tired of the chaos and time and  expense  this hacker has already caused.  I’ve filled out so many forms I’ve lost count.

I don’t know for sure because all of this chaos only started in May of this year, and I actually moved because I was attacked in my sleep in May of 2020.  The hacker gained access to my home under false pretenses in 2019 and frightened me enough to fear reporting any of this.  I just want normal access that the average individual who has spent thousands on Apple devices and hundreds of hours “securing” devices and ids only to discover nothing is really secure after all.  I can’t afford a new MBP 13” retina (and it was a 2015 edition anyway), and I’ve put VPNs, Malware, etc, etc   -  which then screws up my access to other services I need.  And Google is one of the biggest leaks, but just try getting around without any of the Google apps or widgets or whatever, and see how much time you spend trying to get email history, dealing with Google security alerts, finding that even a new iPhone suddenly has game apps downloaded when I don’t play any video games ever - and now there are all these open license advanced lists that I never opted in to, but have been turned sometimes and sometimes not.
I realize this is an international plague, but I’m just one person  with semi-pro photographs and recordings of my kids playing music, and a few voicemails from my late husband who passed away 8 years ago - none of which I can now access, and I’m afraid that the whole world now has access to my private memorabilia.   I’ve honestly already spent 30+ hours with Apple Support, 3 trips to the Apple Store, hours on end with Google Support, with Verizon support, and Xfinity as well - and I’m still getting hacked one way or another. But this isn’t the problem I asked about.  I simply can’t use my MBP because of the firmware lock and all the information in the world about the seller, the item number, the receipt, the serial number, etc, doesn’t seem to be helping.  Please excuse my frustration.  Thanks for the help - really.

Been there, done that.  The fact that there doesn’t appear to be a solution isn’t very heartwarming, considering the amount of money and time  I and so many others have put into these systems.

Apple is really problematic around this stuff. It's hard to recover if your don't have access to the original apple ID registered to the device. The seller should have done a factory reset before selling so your would controle the machine. I was having difficulty with update and reinstalled the OS from safe/recovery mode and no data was lost.

If you back up all your data do that and the maybe a full reset.
