Automatic payments

Sellers have the option to get an automatic payment on item won.  First off the seller chooses this option and it's not listed anywhere in the description. Ebay told me to contact the seller first to see if they have the automatic payment option.  Inconvenience if you bid on an item that ends soon like a couple hours. Seller won't have time to respond. Not to mention last minute bids. I understand the seller gets paid right away and doesn't have to wait or non payments etc. If there are multiple items from the same seller there will be issues with combined shipping. Again Ebay said contact the seller. Another Inconvenience. What if I need to make a deposit in my account to pay for the item the next day for instance but the money is automatically taken. Can cause over draft problems. No I do not care for this new option for sellers at all.

Yes, sellers have the option to require a method of payment on auctions and Best Offers.

But…many sellers are opted I without their knowledge, many sellers don’t even know that the requirement is there.

If the seller does know they aren’t required to post it in the listing.

That would be the only way to find out if the sellers is even aware of that requirement setting. The seller Amy or may not respond, that’s true, nor are they required to.

The seller can combine shipping and issue a refund for the overage, but that is entirely the sellers choice.

It’s an inconvenience to ask a question?  In the time it takes to place a bid you can ask a question. Whether the seller responds, well that’s a different story.

If your bank account or whatever is low on funds, then I suggest not bidding until you have funds to cover your auction purchase. Or get another payment method.

@7693430,

I agree that the new add a payment method before being able to bid or make an offer is a policy that was not well thought out on ebay's part.  What's even worse is they did not Announce the change, or notify sellers that they have been opted into it.

It has forced me to try and place an early bid just to see if the Payment requirement pops up.  If it does I notify the seller and ask them if they knew they had been opted into the policy?  I tell them about its drawbacks, and where to find it, if they did not want to be opted in. Hopefully, at eBay Open in September, the issue will be discussed.

Sellers have not been required to reply to buyer questions. Could this have just changed ?

Does ebay now require sellers to disclose if the automatic payment option is or is not in place ?

Why would you need to ask the seller? If you bid your bid will either be accepted or you will be asked for your payment info if it's required.  That is the simplest way to find out.  Then you can choose to enter your payment info and  submit your bid. Or back out of the page.

@fab_finds4u

I think the problem is, that once a BUYER ID is forced into the program and is asked to set a DEFAULT payment, that 'default payment source' is retained.  Unless they remove that payment choice, they are not prompted to add it again, and it will remain in place for the next time  or round of bidding for that or another seller.

The buyer only finds out when they notice, for example, their auction wins being auto paid for one at a time instead of being available to 'request total' at the end.  They won ten small bag of beads with shipping at $4, each, they will be paying $40 total for something that normally, if combined would be less than $5.

It appears that once a buyer falls for this the first time and sets a default payment, they need to remove that default payment source in order to be informed when multiple wins from the same seller will not be allowed to be combined before they start bidding again.

If you ever provided a default payment source in order to bid,  you need to remove it.  Then when you go to bid on another seller's items that requires it, you will be "prompted" (required)  to add one.  Then you will know if you will have the autopay program in place, and a combined invoice to save on shipping is not going to be possible
