Estate beaded necklace, Amber? Bakelite? Very strong lingering smell when put under hot water.

I purchased this necklace at an old estate. The smaller beads are amber colored. The larger beads cherry colored. When put under hot water there is thsi strong smell identifiable to Bakelite. It is strong and lasting and it does not go away for a long time.  Can anyone enlighten me as to what this is and the era in which it was made? thank you, The beads are dull in color.
