I got a similar notice one time, except it wasn't a pm or anything like that. I went to the Help pages to the topic about selling limits, and a pop up appeared on the page, telling me that my limit was five thousand or some number like that, outlandish for a non-seller. My opinion is that it's an unintended consequence of programming.
You could prioritize your items, then start listing them with the most important ones first. If you get cut off at 250 then you're no worse off than you were, and any, if any, past the expected 250 is just gravy.
