I sold a game w/bakelite checkers, the buyer sent me a message several weeks later AND submitted a return request. They said one checker had a slight indention on top but would be willing to keep if I wanted to do a partial refund. I messaged back and said I'd give a small partial refund.
Buyer never responded, even after I wrote again a day or two later so I just accepted the return request.
Now 16 days later they just messaged me, said they've not been on to see the message and like the game and would be ok w/keeping and accepting my small $10 partial refund for the one checker they weren't happy with.
I am not sure what to do in this situation since I've already okayed the return process. The buyer has just 7 days to send it back now. The return shipping will be paid by me if they do return.
What do I need to do to make sure I don't get stung on this.? Thanks!

You shouldn't have offered the partial refund. If they notified you several weeks after they receive the item they were well past the 30 days allowed by Ebay to file a claim. So there was nothing that buyer could do to open a claim.
Not sure why you wrote them a second time to offer some of your money to them when they didn't respond to the first email.
They filed a Request for return and you approved it?
It appears you are talking about the Backgammon set sold on April 2nd. While it is likely they were too late to file the Request for Return, since you accepted it, you likely need to complete processing it.
Did you issue the buyer a return shipping label? Now it is just time to wait and see if they return the item for refund. Do NOT contact them again. Let this play out. See what they do. They may not send it back at all and you will get to keep all your money.
If they do email you again. I would encourage you to come back here and tell us what they have said and let us advise you on how to proceed.
I would encourage you to study the link below. It is rather a long policy page, so take your time with it so you don't get overwhelmed. But it is extremely important for you to understand this policy as it contains Seller Protections too.

They were within the return window. I sent the offer of a $10 refund and they did not respond so I messaged again the next day and no answer so then I proceeded to accept the return so I wouldn't get in trouble w/Ebay by missing the deadline.
I could wait until the return deadline passes next Mon. but I feel like I should give the $10 since I said I would and I'm sure they would leave me a negative review if I didn't. I want to do everything I should be doing but I don't want to get scammed.

Thank you for the additional information. In your opening statement on the thread you had said after "several weeks" the buyer contacted you about the problem. It was that statement that made me think they were past the 30 days.
Time to stay silent now. If they don't return the item in the next couple of weeks or so, you can ask Ebay to close the claim or just wait and Ebay will close it due to the buyer not sending the item back. It would be in your favor at this time, but Ebay does take around 30 days to do that.

Buyer has reached out twice since yesterday letting me know they would like to take me up on the $10 partial refund. I have not yet responded. Can they cancel their return request?
I am concerned that if I go ahead and do it before the deadline (19th) they will still go ahead w/the return and then I'll be out the shipping cost, the partial refund and the item refund.
I think it is odd they are all of the sudden very quick to respond where as before it took a very long time.
