Possible Fraud - help

Could not get a contact number for Ebay off website so Googled in "Ebay " and got a phone number to call.  The person who I talked to said I had not gotten my full refund on an item since I had not set up an Ebay Wallet.  He then said he would help me set up an Ebay Wallet and had me download an app and then started asking a lot of questions like did I have  debit card, do I know my driver's license number - all the while taking me thru steps on this app ...... and then asking me to type in Moonbay.com.  I said I was getting a little uneasy with all of this and then he hung up.  Is this a scam ?  Need someone at Ebay to talk to about this.

Re: Possible Fraud - help

Yes it's a scam. eBay doesn't publish a phone number because their customer service reps are still working from home due to the pandemic. Any number you find through a web search is manned by criminals trying to steal your money.

You can request a callback from eBay:

Or you can ask your question here for help from experienced members.

Re: Possible Fraud - help

Yes, it is a scam.  If you gave him access to any of your card info, you should call your card issuer and report your card compromised. They will issue a new card for you and freeze the old one.

You can speak to customer service. They are aware of the scam, which has nothing to do with eBay - the site that gave you a phone number was not eBay.

To contact customer service, follow the instructions on this page to work through the automated assistant to request a call back - select agent when it is an option -

Re: Possible Fraud - help

Thank you so much - 1)  I have removed the app off my phone 2)  I do not have a debit card - so nothing was given to them on that, 3)  I did not give them my driver's license number 4)  checked my credit card on file with Ebay and no charges.    Anything else I should be doing ??

If you gave them control of your computer, you should run a virus scan and malwarebytes.

Re: Possible Fraud - help

Here is the scam phone number - you would think after 22 years on Ebay I would have caught this immediately -

1-810-643-1219

Re: Possible Fraud - help

From what I have read, this type of scam is generally focused on getting funds from your bank account. So as long as you did not give them access to your bank, I think you should be OK.

I would still check you credit card regularly so if there is any issue, you catch it right away.  My card has been hacked a couple of times (not through eBay), so I check it every few days.

Re: Possible Fraud - help

They were trying to take control of phone and anything associated with the phone (computer?) - but I accidentally hit "stop" instead of proceed - so may have dodged a bullet there.  Thanks again for your help - Running scan now.
