Metal Embossing Tips

Metal Embossing Tips

Someone on another thread was asking about metal embossing. I found this tip on some TV show and thought others could benefit.

Rather than spend butt-loads of $$ on the sheets of metal or other products, I got a roll of aluminum tape from The Home Depot (also called insulation tape or metal tape). It costs about $5.00 and the roll is 2" wide and 180 feet.

You can emboss this with a stencil or run it through the sizzix sidekick or even use it with hand punches. Then, peel off the back and it already has adhesive. I've not tried this, but I'm sure you can even sand and ink if you want.

I'm adding a pic in the next post to show you how nicely the embossing with stencils works out.

I've never embossed in my life. What do you use to do the embossing in this pic above? A blunt type of tool? Is there possibly ANYTHING I already own that would do that? LOL I can't keep buying. AAACCCKKKK!!!

toe mater, that's a great tip! I never even knew about the metal tape! I have bought the Making Memories sheets, and pieces of metal from the hardware store, but I like the already-adhesive tape idea.

What a GREAT idea!! I have some stencils and the embossers and the light box, etc. I love the idea of using the aluminum tape! I recently bought a stampress and bought their gold and silver foil to emboss. TFS!! Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Awe, Cheryl...I'm sorry. I can understand not wanting to keep buying stuff. It's like "does this ever end???" LOL.

I used a metal stencil and a stylus - which is like a pen but the tips are rounded balls that press the tape into the crevices. You can get both tools from wally world for cheap. I can't think of any around-the-house items that would do the same thing without tearing the tape and with the ability to get into tiny spaces. But, if you have punches, you can make some nice shiny shapes. I cut some hearts out and put them on a wedding card and some snowflakes for a Christmas card.

zombie, yeah...and i'm sure the tape is a better bargain. Although the roll has more feet of tape than any of us will use in a lifetime.

Too bad the tape doesn't come in other finishes like gold or bronze.

Jeannie, what does TFS mean? =)

Cheryl, Tricia
Hey, if you do try this, show us what you made with it. :grinning_face_with_big_eyes: I'd like to get some ideas of HOW to utilize this tip into a layout or tag or something. On the show where I learned this they made a card stock picture frame and covered it in embossed tape then distressed with paint, etc. for a layout. That sounds like alot of work.

CHERYL - I HAVE THE PERFECT IDEA FOR YOU!!!!

I just remembered this...if you don't want to buy the stylus tool or metal stencils, you can punch some shapes in heavy card stock, put them UNDER the tape then press the tape down over it with your finger and it would give it the raised impression. I imagine you could put anything under the tape (metal swirly paperclip, chipboard stuff, buttons) to make an impression.

=)

Hey, do you need special cutters to cut aluminum tape? Like metal cutters or something?
If so I'll have to buy me some of them too.
Thanks

What a fantastic idea!! I'm stealing it if you don't mind. Watch out Home Depot, here come the scrappers!! I mean can you imagine this guy name Bud in his little orange apron being asked 10 times a day "Where is that metal tape stuff? You know, that stuff I can emboss on?" Priceless!!! I'm thinking it would look fab dry brushed!!!

Tricia, you don't need special scissors at all. This tape is so fabulously light weight. I just use my regular scissors.

Quilly, feel free to steal away. I'm glad you guys find this a great idea.

As for Lowes & Home Depot, whenever DH takes me there with him he thinks I'm so interested in being at a home improvement store. I'm really looking around at all the tools and hardware and see if I detect any scrap potential. But if my interest builds up "awesome wife" points, so be it. Our little secret. =)

toe
what a great idea! TFS.
I just got back from Wal Mart and had to go right passed Lowes, wish I saw this earlier. Guess I'm going back out! LOL
Girls, for those of you who are planning on getting your embossing tool (stylus), just thought I'd let you know they come in different sizes. If you only want to get 1 for now, get the smallest. You can do large areas with the small one, but you can't do tiny areas with the large one. I have 3 sizes, and I use the smallest one 90% of the time.
