How can you end more than one process at a time?

How can you end more than one process at a time?

In Task Manager under the Processes tab if I want to end a bunch of processes, I have to do it one at a time. Even if I hold down the Ctrl button, when I highlight one process to end, and then a second one, the first one gets un-highlighted. Is there some setting that would let me end more than one at a time?

Not that I know of normally but there may be a different task manager that you can install that would allow it unless it would crash your system.

I have System explorer installed as my Task manager and it gives much greater detail about each task, but it only allows you to end one at a lime too.

Why would you want to do that anyways.

Seems to me that you would crash the systems doing that if you could.

I often end these processes after starting up the computer otherwise they suck up too much memory and the computer slows to a crawl.

Java.exe

MsMpEng.exe

Svchost.exe

RetroExpress.exe

Retrospect.exe

Hpqste08.exe

Mitchell.Platform…

VidaMonitor.exe

A few minutes later most of them seem to come back though.

you should google processes and determine IF you need them to run, before killing processes

Java.exe should not be seen on your task manager... you may have jqs(java helper) and or jusched(java update checker) running and it would be acceptable to close.

IF Java is running, perhaps it is a hung update? Go to control panel and open the Java console...make sure the box is checked for run/hide console...go to the advanced tab,

and check for updates...run and allow the update if available,  IF this is the upgrade to Java 7

it should automatically uninstall Java 6 but may not have run or be running incomplete if you

have never closed all IE and java processes to allow the update to finish...

MsMpEng is the windows firewall - check to make sure you are not running(enabled) 2 different firewalls or antivirus programs...IF you are running another firewall intentionally, disable windows firewall from the security center...

Svchost enables running two independent processes at the same time...it should close

when your machine is only running ONE app, but will appear when new processes load, associated by the Process ID to the new Process...best left alone if NOT understood what it is enabling...

RetroExpress, and Retrospect are a Backup Application, will only load After you authorize incremental backups...change the program settings so YOU control when incremental backups are run/ or disable the program in startups untill you can figgure out the proper process to do so...

Hpqst08  is a add on for your imaging device- this can be disabled via startups, and will or should run when you enable your imaging device...

VidaMonitor is a new one on me - google says its developed by Volvo car manufacturer(possibly a service schedule reminder?) if you are not responsible for it or dont want it being on the machine- google says you should be able to uninstal via add-remove programs

Mitchell.Platform - insufficient info - possible adware possible but unlikely Beauty School connection????

IF you havent already... download and install CCleaner from Piriform - Do NOT set it to run automatically...DO instal a destop ICON so you can run when you desire//You probably also will want to set it NOT to automatically check for updates...but you should do so from time to time...

ON CCleaner >Tools you can clean up your START MENU disable/google what processes are uneccessary for WINDOWS to load and run( generally that is anything NOT Microsoft(MS))

THEN on your Browser of choice - Disable all Add-ons you do not use and ACTUALLY need,

use bookmarks and favorites - NOT Toolbars and Web-Nannys...

The above two should prevent unwanted processes starting, unless some malware happens to sneak onto your machine...So MONITOR what comes up, and try to eliminate what is prompting the process, instead of killing the process, locate it on your computer/see what it is RUNNING UNDER...and change settings/modify settings/ or remove the instigator as appropriate...

Why don't you increase the memory of the machine, if it is feasible?

I went from the 3Gb in the old laptop to the new 12GB and there is a night and day difference.

On the surface, it only increased memory by 4x. But OS and other processes eats up about 2GB of memory. Available memory went from only 1GB to 10GB.

Another option is to get a good startup manager and only start programs you will need at start up.

It's a 8 year old XP machine already at it's max of 4GB RAM as I understand it. Wouldn't want to put any money in it as I'm searching for a newer model anyway.

Don't think I can afford to hire a manager just for my home computer. Even those rent-a-geeks cost an arm and a leg.

As gem says, I try the CCleaner. VidaMonitor is part of the Volvo repair manual program, and Mitchell.Platform is for a collision damage estimating program.

And just today, after hitting the POST button after every message I post here, I now get this:

If you clicked on a link, it may be out of date.   What you can try:   Retype the address.   Go back to the previous page.   Go to  and look for the information you want.   More information

Ya don't say. Well, with this machine, I can never be sure who or what to blame when it's acting up. Is it the computer, is it the internet connection, is it the website, etc. Just waiting for an excuse to get a better one but it refuses to break down.
