Input Request for Comics

Input Request for Comics

Hello Comics Community,

Over the course of the next several months, select Category Managers will be announcing the introduction of item condition (e.g., New, Graded, Uncirculated) to their categories.

Based on feedback given to us by the eBay community, we have found that item condition is an important piece of information for buyers, and we’ve found that listings with specified conditions are more likely to sell.

As some of you might be aware item condition is an item specific. I n some categories item condition will be available in the next few months for sellers who list items through the Sell Your Item form, Turbo Lister, Seller Assistant, Seller Assistant Pro, or Selling Manager Pro.

We’d like to ask for your feedback about item condition for some of the collectibles areas. Therefore we are focusing on creating a “graded” definition for Comics. Other categories may be considered at a later time.

Below you will find an overall definition we have prepared for “graded”:

Graded–

A comic is considered ‘graded’ if it has been examined and certified by a reputable industry grading company (such as CGC) and has been assigned a certain grade level (levels range from .5=Poor to 10=Mint). Comics without an assigned ‘grade’ level from a reputable company will be considered ‘ungraded’.

As a seller, you can use the description area of your listing to provide buyers with any relevant details concerning the condition of the Comic(s), including but not limited to age, tears, creases and repair or restoration history.

We would like to get your feedback on the following two questions:

A) Does the definition of “graded” make sense to you for Comics?

B) If not, how would you define “graded”?

Thank you in advance for taking the time to provide input.

Sincerely,

Kathryn K.

If the standard goes to letter plus number, I will switch

The lettering system is:

impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible,impossible, impossible, impossible.

No two people will ever grade the same. Someone thinks it wiil make grading more accurate - this is wrong - there is now even more room for error - even more room for complaint - even less chance of a dealer competeing with CGC and Heritage - it has nothing to do with comics - it is market monopoly - it is money - has anyone ever asked if anyone at CGC or Heritage has ever read a comic?

If they want to treat comics like antiques, then they should wait 50 years before grading and entombing any comic - and they still wouldn't need a decimal system!!!!!

"Some claim that CGC originated the 10-point scale."

I always heard it was Metropolis that started it, and they claim as much also:

Why does it matter if it is letter or number? Overstreet converted the 100 point scale down to 10 point and then gave number to letter conversions so it really shouldn't matter if it's either one. I prefer the letters because it is what I have used since before the average Playboy bunny was born...

Well, I'm certainly comfortable using letter-only grades, but I think a numerical scale does help in making grading less opaque to those who are newer to grading or collecting comics in general. IIRC, the ONE was implemented to give a quantitative feel to grading and help objectify things more. Everyone understands what a 7/10 means, whereas F/VF only means something to hobbyists.

The letter grade can be confusing to newbies. Very Good doesn't mean very good, it means pretty worn!

GOOD means even worse, and FAIR isn't like the weather.

Terrible idea... If it's CGC graded, then I know what that means (sort of, their standards are secret). If it's PGX, that's something different.

If a comic is not slabbed, then it's clearly not slabbed.

The word "graded" is in the public domain, nobody can rightfully claim to "own" it.

How about the word "HOT"? Maybe someone wants exclusive use of that word too?

I personally think it should be left as it is.
Any type of grading is nothing more than opinions of those doing the grading.
I could just as easily go and pay 90.00 to get a corporation license with a name "Ancients Comics Grading Company LLC"
Would that mean that I could then classify my books as certified or graded??
Until these companies Publish their grading criteria it means nothing in my opinion.

Hi

It wouldn't hurt to check out this thread. This one really is better than the idea of using "Graded" in Categorys:
