Derby SP Co Squirrel Nut Bowl - Age of It, Anyone..?

Derby SP Co Squirrel Nut Bowl - Age of It, Anyone..?

Last Edited 08:00:49 AM

I came across a large nut bowl, 8 1/2" diameter and 3 1/2" deep to the rim, with squirrel on oak leaves with acorns, made by the Derby Silver Plate Co. It has the number 4339 engraved under the base.

Does anyone have an idea of its likely age? It does have a few minor dents and needs cleaning, but I thought it was wonderful.

I can't help you on the age of this particular bowl, but found a website that says Derby's squirrel motif flatware was patented in 1875.

Well, while it would be nice to think this particular bowl would have been produced as some kind of "match" to the squirrel design by Brittin in 1875, my humble personal opinion is that we talking after Derby joined International Silver. I haven't found any reference to the exact date that "Plate" was added to the Derby name, but given that I can't find a mark of known earlier age with Plate in the name, that is my conclusion.

Other than the squirrel, I also don't see anything 1875-ish about the design either.

As I said, JMHO.

BTW, the number on the bottom is 4839 rather than 4339, . I have found reference to at least 1 other Derby S.P. squirrel item with the number 4839. Have found several silver squirrel bowels, napkin rings, etc. made by other companies. They all seem to date from the 1870s to the 1890s.

Found a listing of Derby's silver items with their numbers in:

"... following article that was published in 1887, long after Edwin Brittin’s death.  It appears that the employees of Derby Silver had gone on strike and they ask “that you aid us to bring the arrogance of this company to an end. This can be done by refusing to purchase their products.” The article goes on to provide a full listing of all of Derby Silver Company’s marks and trade mark."

Edwin Brittin designed and held the patent on the Derby's squirrel motif flatware. On that list is "4800 to 4899  Nut Bowls."  Your bowl would fall into this range. As the company was founded in 1872, this article narrows the timeframe of your bowl to 1872-1887.

Need to scroll down the page about 2/3rds of the way to see an image of the article.
