I'm probably in the wrong section but I was metal detecting in my son's backyard. I got a high hit that something was 6 inches down. I dug down and found a buckle. It's not that I think it's worth anything it's just not finding what type of buckle it is. I Google searched and lens search and out of the thousands of buckle I just can't seem to find what this buckle is for. It doesn't seem that old...maybe it is since it was so deep down but can anyone identify this type of buckle? It's just the point of knowing what my first find is. Thanks to anyone willing to help.

Do you know what was once in that area? I don't know where you live, so don't know if its related to a battlefield, farm, mill/ industrial area... Knowing that would narrow things down quite a bit.

My son lives across the street from Wharton state forest in pine barrens in NJ. Amatol was a munition village during WW1, then they built a raceway or something like that

Long time relic hunter here. Not sure what that might be, but its not military and not terribly old based on patina. You might try posting on treasurenet.com, if anyone can definitively ID it, those folks can.

I will do that. Thank you

Have you tried the Sears catalog? dimensions, weight, side view might help.

If there was a munitions plant that could've been a pallet strap buckle or something of that nature. It looks like there would have been a rectangular locking knob that would pass thru the bottom half of the buckle then the load could be adjusted like the buckle on a trouser belt.
It may or may not be military, but the metal with the galvanized surface resembles buckles I've seen on ww1 era equipment harnesses and load- bearing equipment.

If you can show us other stuff from the area or tell us what else you are finding that may help too.

That was the only thing I found other then pieces of aluminum cans and screws and stuff. We didn't search his whole back yard since it's pretty big. After I found that buckle I started thinking about the school kids that were detecting in red bank battlefield in national park NJ....kid got a strong hit, started digging and found a old coin and kept digging and started finding human remains of hessian soldiers. There were numerous bodies from revolutionary war....something like 15 if them. So I was thinking that I didn't wanna find something like that lol I just moved on

No but I Google searched and lens searched and found nothing

Yeah... I used to love digging old 19th century dumps in rural NH. Found a lot of neat stuff. Every now and then I would hit a patch of animal ( meat) bones, and would get the willies, LOL.

I'd love to find something amazing. I read about the amazing finds in Europe....like full chariots or 1000 yr old swords. Can you imagine? I recently bought a fishing magnet. I only used it once but I'm working on finding a good spot where I know where some of the oldest settlements were. Most are on state and federal land but there's a few areas my way I may find something interesting. I have too much time on my hands so Im gonna spend more time doing this. It's exciting

I wish I had as much time as I used to. It really was exciting.... No Roman chariots nor coin hoards, but all the same, it was fun wondering what I was going to find next. I probably have the largest collection of 18 and 19th century clay smoking pipes... The equivalent of today's cigarette butts. 😁

There is a piece missing where the rectangular hole is. Along the edges of the hole you can see the outline of the missing piece. Sorry I am posting so late.
