Community Guidelines

eBay Community is a space for eBay sellers and buyers to connect with one another. eBay staff occasionally participate, but eBay users are at the heart of building and growing the eBay Community. These Community Guidelines are the foundation for fostering a welcoming, helpful, and respectful experience for all users.

We expect all users to act in accordance with them while on Community, as well as comply with the eBay User Agreement and eBay Privacy Notice.

Be respectful.

Respect is the cornerstone of a strong community. Every member should feel welcome, no matter who they are or where they come from. Please be friendly and welcoming if you are an experienced member. If you are new, take some time to look around and be open to learning from experienced sellers and buyers.

Keep it clean.

As a peer-to-peer community, we expect users to keep the eBay Community a safe destination for all users. Your contributions should be respectful and appropriate for all ages.

Be accurate.

A thriving community has trustworthy content from honorable contributors. Your content should be true and accurate, to the best of your knowledge.

Stay open minded - but have your say.

Opinions and different points of view are welcomed and can be discussed (and even disagreed about) in a frank, but calm and reasonable manner. Feedback can be true while also giving a different point of view; please be open to hearing differing opinions as there are multiple ways to successfully sell and buy on eBay.

Share meaningful contributions.

Please use search to see if your question has already been answered. If you don’t find what you need, then please post in the correct forum for your topic. If others say something you agree with, you also can use the ‘Helpful’ button on the bottom of each item to show your appreciation and agreement. Or use the “Accepted Solutions” option whenever another user provides you with an answer you found helpful.

Get the help you need.

Please ask for recommendations for tools to help run your business, to find items to purchase, or to share your items or listings to get feedback or provide examples to other users. It’s appropriate for users to also respond to these types of questions with listings, products, or services.

Share, celebrate… and have fun!

Buying and selling on eBay isn’t the only thing that is important to you. Share your hobby, or complain about your pet peeve. Celebrate your latest thrifting score, or post a death pile photo. This community welcomes hearing about your latest personal triumph, a moment where you need support, or just an amazing meal you made (in the appropriate forum). This community is designed to connect people, and the more we get to know each other, the more our businesses will grow together.

Content and actions not permitted

Inappropriate content or content in violation of these community guidelines, or the eBay User Agreement, should not be posted. You agree to refrain from posting content or taking actions that are:

  • adult, pornographic, violent, or mature in nature
  • language or threats prohibited in the Threats and offensive language policy
  • dishonest, unsubstantiated, or designed to mislead
  • duplicative or repetitive - including forum posts and replies
  • calling for petitions, boycotts, lawsuits, or other calls to activism in either posts or private messages or to otherwise drive traffic elsewhere
  • advertising listings, products, or services in order to solicit sales or otherwise use the Community as a marketing platform
  • promoting off-eBay sites, groups, or forums, or suggestions that encourage users to leave eBay
  • reposted content that has been edited or removed by eBay Community staff
  • about moderation warnings or consequences
  • about another user’s listings or user IDs to tarnish their reputation (e.g. “naming & shaming”) or otherwise calling the community to action. NOTE: It is appropriate to respectfully comment on an item or listing shared by a seller looking for feedback about their listing or the item listed
  • encouraging others to violate the eBay User Agreement, listing policies, selling practices policy, or any other policies
  • of copyrighted content without the permission of the copyright owner
  • manipulating the “Helpfuls” by giving an excessive number of helpfuls, using multiple accounts to give yourself or others helpfuls, and marking another member’s posts as helpful to help them get to the top of leaderboards

Reporting Inappropriate Content:

The eBay Community is built for eBay users, and it’s users like you who are likely to be the first to see posts that harm the community and violate Community Guidelines. Please do not confront the other user in these situations; instead use the tools we have in place for your safety. Report inappropriate behavior by clicking the :options_arrow: “arrow dropdown” in the top right-hand corner of any post or private message, then selecting “Report Inappropriate Content.” This will alert our moderation team to look into the issue and take appropriate action. Your report will only be viewed by the eBay Community team. Please report a post or message only once.

Consequences and considerations:

When posts veer off topic, conversations become heated, or users violate these guidelines, the eBay Community team may move content, offer public or private reminders or warnings via private message at their discretion.

Violating posts or content may be edited or removed, and eBay reserves the right to restrict or revoke users’ access to Community for violating Community guidelines.

Third party and Press

Third-party representatives looking to post on Community must secure approval prior to posting.

Reporters seeking official comment or who wish to engage with eBay users directly must first contact press@ebay.com and receive permission to post.

This helps ensure that the eBay community is aware when they are speaking to someone who is acting in a professional capacity, rather than as a fellow eBay community member or eBay staff member. eBay doesn’t warrant the accuracy of or affirmatively endorse content from verified third party members.

Learn your way around.

You’ve made a great start by reading these guidelines. If you are new to selling on eBay use the Search feature (All content Search bar at top of any page in Community) to search for a topic and read how other sellers approach the issue, see our videos on how to use the eBay Community and check out the Seller Center for general selling information.

Thank you for being a part of the eBay community and for adhering to these guidelines.
