It may not be your fault that the item was reported as missing upon receipt, but it's your responsibility to make sure that the buyer gets what they ordered. If you can't do that, they're entitled to their money back.
If you're unwilling to voluntarily give the buyer a refund, the buyer will likely file a complaint through their credit card issuer who will ensure that they get their payment back from you.
Sorry this happened to you, but as noted, this is one of the risks of doing business online.

·3 weeks agoAs "stainlessenginecovers" has stated, you are on the hook for getting the item to the buyer. One of the risks of ecommerce. You would need to have the buyer take pictures of the damaged package and to keep the packaging so the postal inspector can examine it. Of course, all of that is moot if you did not insure the package for an adequate amount.

·3 weeks agoThat being the case you will need to refund the buyer and then take the loss of your year end taxes.

·3 weeks agoI'm guessing you used an ESE label? If so, there's no insurance on ESE. Or if you shipped with a stamp, that's no insured either.
Was it the Morgan dollar that sold for $395?
Do you think the buyer is telling the truth?

·3 weeks agoAn 'agent' won't help you.
If buyer opened a 'return' you must approve.
There is no proof what you sent, condition it was in and it is 100% YOUR responsibility to get the item to the customer- safely and in 1 piece.
If package was damaged, still your responsibility to refund customer (upon it's return and then you can fight it out with the carrier.
