Item for sale but bidder wants to back out
Hello:
I was contacted by a bidder on one of my items I am selling on ebay.
They want me to delete their bid but I believe they have to retract the bid themselves.
Can I do this or does the bidder have to retract the bid?

Your Auction may be for a Toy or Hobby item, but this topic should have been posted on the Selling Board. where you would have received quicker answers. Buying & Selling > Selling.
Buyers do have the option to retract bids, but many may not know how to do that, or if you look at the buyer's feedback profile page click on As A Buyer, you may find they have several retractions already and do not want to get more.
Whether or not I would cancel a bid on one of my auctions would depend on, How many bids they placed, and if there are several bids on the auction. If they bid against another bidder's earlier higher automatic bid and out bid them, after exposing that price, it could lead to that bidder retracting their bid(s) thinking that a Shill was being used. In that case I would not reply or cancel their bid. Let them win and get an unpaid Item strike.
You can cancel their bid, but if they did not give you a reason for wanting to cancel, or if they are a new/inexperienced member, I would cancel their Bid(s) but as a precaution I would add them to my Blocked Buyer List. Bid cancellations/retractions can ruin an auction.
The link below tells you how and when you can cancel a bid.
