      Taking loss after loss

Can some of the great veteran Ebayers explain to me how so many sellers can sell new items at a lost and sell oodles of a particular item. It ruins it it for those trying to make a few bucks on a transaction. I have been on Ebay for almost 28 years now and I still don't understand how these sellers can continue taking loss after loss. These type of listings are incredibly abundant across Ebay. . . . .

      Live selling and ebay's future...

With the addition of live selling, it sort of feels like ebay is splitting into two distinct selling platforms. Not sure what will happen in the future - if this will be beneficial or not - but hopefully the live format will attract more eyes to existing stores, buy it now, and auction listings. What is your experience? Are you seeing more traffic now that live selling is so widely promoted?

Promote with confidence: A deep dive into suggested ad rate

Setting the right ad rate for your promoted listing can be challenging – too low and your listing may not get enough visibility, too high and it can impact your profit. That’s where eBay’s suggested ad rate comes in. It’s a data-driven recommendation designed to help you balance performance and cost for each of your listings, so you can promote with confidence and less guesswork.   What is the suggested ad rate?   When you promote your listing using a general strategy, your ad rate is a percentage of the item’s total sale amount that helps determine when and where your listing appears in ad placements across eBay. The suggested ad rate is a recommended percentage unique to your specific listing and current marketplace conditions. It’s designed to help you increase visibility while keeping your ad costs aligned with your goals. Because it’s calculated for each listing, it can be a helpful starting point – especially in competitive categories. It also makes advertising on eBay easy and more effective.   How is the suggested ad rate calculated?   The suggested ad rate uses AI and takes into consideration multiple signals when calculating a competitive rate, including:   Competition: Ad rates set by competitors, number of listings in the item’s category, increase or decrease in traffic for the item or category, start or stop of other promoted listings Listing attributes: Price, quantity available for sale, item details Listing quality: Photos, description, and completeness Past performance: Seasonality, days listed, quantity sold, organic impressions, ad impressions, organic clicks, ad clicks   These factors are evaluated daily, and the suggested ad rate may change over time as marketplace dynamics on eBay shift.   What happens when you use the suggested ad rate?   Increasing your ad rate can impact how often and where your listing appears. Here are three common outcomes:   I got more impressions and clicks, and the item sold. This is ideal and what we expect to happen. In fact, sellers saw over 100% more impressions when promoting their listings with a general strategy compared to non-promoted items, on average (Data from Jan 2026 – Mar 2026). I got more impressions and clicks, but the item didn’t sell. When you increase your ad rate, your promoted listing is eligible to show more often and in more places across eBay. As a result, visibility and engagement increase, but conversion may lag. This could be an opportunity to improve your listing. I didn’t get more impressions or clicks. Competition may be high, or your listing may not yet be competitive enough to get more visibility.   Applying the suggested ad rate can increase the visibility of your listing, but performance still depends on buyer demand, pricing, listing quality, and marketplace dynamics on eBay.   Take your listing from good to great   There are other factors at play when promoting your listings. To help you get the most out of suggested ad rate, consider improving the quality of your listings:   Price competitively: Use the eBay research tool or view recently sold listings. Write a relevant title: Include keywords specific to the item and organize them in a legible order. Write a helpful description: Start by generating an AI description and then add key item details. Add more photos: Add at least 4 unique, high-quality photos. Try videos too! Provide item specifics: Select the right category and include as many details as possible. Appeal to potential buyers: Allow offers, provide free shipping, and decrease handling time.   If you have questions or feedback for us,  please share them .

Hooray for the Holidays Part II

Hello Sellers,   Here we are – can you believe it's December? Cyber Week is behind us, and while that week is always hyped as the zenith of holiday shopping, between now and mid-month is truly where we see the (retail) 'rubber meet the road.' This crucial window is when sellers like you fuel the season’s spirit with one-of-a-kind, meaningful items for shoppers and gift-givers. And while I hope you saw a successful Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday – know that there’s still plenty of browsing and buying in the weeks to come.    In Part I of this holiday series, I touched on consumer sentiment and how we’re driving attention to your listings. In Part II, I’ll share some shipping, listing, and selling cues to keep in mind as shopping picks up steam. I encourage you all to check out our ' How to Attract Last-Minute Shoppers ' blog. Finally, we'll round out this post with our annual ‘What’s Hot’ list of trends shaping purchases this holiday season.     Smart tips for shipping  This year, more than 75% of shoppers plan to purchase items online – many started as early as October and will keep shopping right up to the end of the holidays. During this busiest of times, our goal is to help you ship efficiently and on schedule – always elements of a good ecommerce experience, but especially important as demand spikes and carriers feel the pressure.        If you haven’t already, do visit this year’s Holiday Shipping Guide , a one-stop shop for key dates, links and questions on everything from consumer trends and packaging options, to seller protections and shipping calculators. You can also access carrier deadlines and holiday shipping fees at eBay’s Seller Center .     Listing re-imagined with AI No respectable 2023 holiday ecommerce blog would be complete without mention of AI (artificial intelligence) – which some say is starting a new era of online shopping experiences . Here at eBay, we were early adopters of AI, and today it touches nearly everything on the platform and marketplace, including our 28+ years of inventory and sales data. This said, I wanted to share two key ways this tech is helping you get more items online faster, easier, and with style:   This season we’re giving you the gift of time…or, at least less time spent cleaning images for professional looking listings. By now I imagine you’ve likely tested our vastly improved image background removal tool , powered by AI, which automatically composes simpler, cleaner, more consistent images.       To speed your listings even more, I encourage experimenting with our new generative AI-powered listing tool that – based simply on a product name and model – suggests initial copy for you to edit. The idea is to remove those “cold start” roadblocks by reducing the time you spend drafting descriptions from scratch, and even enhancing clarity and voice to resonate with your shoppers.     Your business ambitions and needs drive us all year round, but we appreciate how crucial this particular season is to many of you. That’s why I’m excited for these holiday-ready, AI-based tools to support your last-minute sales efforts when you need them most.    Finally, the big ‘What’s Hot’ reveal. Every year, I look forward to the days leading up to Black Friday and through the New Year, ensuring that promotions are running, the marketplace is humming, and that your sales are our top priority. This year is no different, though this season’s landscape – given inflation and economic uncertainty – seems especially nuanced. But that doesn’t mean consumers aren’t shopping. Based on retail news reports across the US, people are buying – so we’re doing all we can to help you showcase the unique inventory, the incredible value, and the highly personal and memorable gifts you bring to the holiday table.   So, in keeping with eBay tradition, here is our annual holiday look-book, inspired by the top cultural trends we’ve been following all year. We’ve taken a fine-tooth comb to our 2023 archives and compiled a catalog representing the unique, stylish, desirable and even practical items on wish lists this season, bridging every passion and pursuit from Sports Superfans to Marvel-Mania. Check out the slideshow below – maybe it will spark your own ideas for a few new listings and giftings!                                 There’s still much more cheer (and shopping) ahead, but in the meantime I hope this official start to the holidays is full of loved ones, joy, and lots of presents. Enjoy, and as always, thank you for selling on eBay!   Adam Ireland VP and GM, eBay US
