First off, I want to preface this post by saying I am aware that this has a near zero chance of reaching anyone that actually works for ebay, let alone the corporate executives that this would need to reach in order for the changes to take place. This is my first post (I think?) on ebay Community, so I'm sure I'll make some mistakes or ask things everyone knows the answer to. This is a post hoping to provide a heads-up to those moving outside the US while providing feedback to the 1-in-a-million ebay staff that may or may not see this. With that in mind, let's begin: This post is basically about the address updating and the " Changing the address on your eBay account" help page ( https://www.ebay.com/help/account/account-account-settings/delivery-billing-address?id=4201&ra=true ) I am, probably like most people, a person that mostly just browses ebay, occasionally adding things to my watchlist with plans to buy them in the future (but usually don't buy or forget about). As to not give away my identity, I'll just say I lived on the east coast (USA) and eventually moved to Japan for a job. Before moving, I sold a computer CPU I didn't need anymore. Fast forward a good 2 years and I'm looking into laptops again since a desktop doesn't fit my needs anymore (plus it gets HOT in Japan. No dehumidifer = a dead PC). Sadly, Samsung doesn't sell any here so I have to look online for a replacement and I'm not willing to compromise on the S-pen (I'm an artist, and Wacom EMR is supreme...but only in samsung laptops as far as windows devices go). So as I'm bookmarking laptops, I start wondering about shipping costs and remember how inaccurate the page usually is before you reach the cart page. So I put an S-pen in my cart and there I notice that my default address is inexplicably set to an older address in Tennessee, despite my last orders being for somewhere else. I assume I must've been lazy about updating it (which is true, and happens more than I'd like to admit) and decide I might as well update my address. This is the moment where I screwed up. Do not make this mistake. It might seem like your doing things the "right way", but it WILL lead to your account getting banned. Instead of just adding the address from the cart, I went to my profile, since it "made sense" and I didn't want to run into the same problem later and accidentally buy something that gets shipped somewhere else entirely. Being overseas now, it's not likely that it would get reshipped to me after user error - best case scenario is it goes back to the seller and then they ask me for the correct address. I received an MC999 suspension within I think 2 days, and went to the internet for answers. Found a customer service number, called, then was transferred to the accounts line, where I was given no information and was basically told to screw off. On the bright(?) side, I was told I can make a new account to buy things, but in my mind, I imagined the new account would get banned too by association - especially considering the policy that me and the customer service associate were reading didn't line up with what he previously said. Perhaps I should expect this account to get nuked within hours. I've never been kicked off from a platform, let alone banned from any platform, so my ego was in a frenzy. Well, still is. What I didn't know - and honestly learned mere minutes before making this post, is that accounts that are allowed to sell are also not allowed to update the country of their account, because of tax related reasons. For an American, this doesn't really mean anything since we have to file and pay our taxes even if we live outside of America. I assume that ebay applies this to both personal and business accounts since a business could probably open an account and sell as a personal page to avoid responsibilities or something (I'm not a lawyer lol - I'm just spitballing). While the experience was incredibly frustrating - and occupied my mental space during what should have been an enjoyable friday off from work - I've come to realize how simple this all could have been. While ebay (staff) has the discretion to disclose the reasons behind their decisions, there are moments where it clearly has no bearing on the situation and only leads to a worse customer experience and brand image. In the case of suspicious sales or scams, sure, that's understandable. I have experience working in account investigations as well, so I'm aware of why certain information shouldn't be disclosed. However, in the case of updating an address? That's the information you couldn't tell me "to protect the community?" Well, this is my first day seeing this community, and I gotta say, I don't think my location is causing them any distress lmao. That being said: This scenario has revealed some structural flaws in ebay as a website, as I'm almost certain the suspension was automated, given the double message within seconds (regular suspension, followed by MC999 - clearly processing time difference). While the change of location can raise the question of account security, there are more logical preventive measures against location-based policy breaches. To any web developers and account/security team members: If updating an accounts country is against policy, why is a user even allowed to do it in the first place? There are other services, that don't allow you to update your country - and some that only allow this if you physically have changed location (Netflix). What I suggest: Simply block off the option to change countries once the account has selling enabled. Notify them that they will not be able to update their location to other countries at the time of enabling - and obviously N OT through fine print on a 5000 word document . Certainly, some of this feels like it shouldn't need to be said, but it's 2026 and you can be banned from a platform for effectively clicking a dropdown menu, typing your address, and pressing "Save" - something that could have been prevented entirely by simply having the option grayed out. Customer service, UX designers, web developers - anyone in corporate please somehow see this and implement this. It would genuinely make your jobs easier - maybe not a LOT easier. But a number of cases would become non-issues instantly. No need to interact with angry customers on this topic, and no need to worry about sellers attempting to change the country registered. Sounds simple - because it is. Certainly more simple than designing a program that automatically flags a user for doing something they were under the impression was the normal thing to do. And if that somehow feels like a security risk, did you consider the option of doing both? That's clearly lower risk than what you're already doing. Note (This is only loosely related to that point): unlimited calling, especially on international calls, is not a thing in most countries. If a real person were really looking at my account activity, they'd know where I've been for the past 2 years and would understand that telling me the reason for the suspension is not a "danger to the community". Getting smug comments and being cut off mid sentence is not what I'm paying extra on my phone bill for. So if anyone reading this thinks I'm being immature and this is a petty vent - well, your right! Pat on the back for you! I can't help being mad that my bill is almost double the price despite nothing being resolved. Ebay severely needs better customer service.
