We need an immediate Shipping Solution to Rural Zipcode upcharges

We need an immediate way to add a option of charging a charge for rural shipping zipcodes, whether that is just a rule that says if it's a rural zipcode, a $xxx service charge will be added due to postal shipping fee changes. I offer free shipping on all my items. When a customer orders a $10 item or $12 item, my profit is maybe $2 after promos etc... maybe $3 but as soon as i have to start eating the extra $2-3 in shipping fees to rural zipcodes the profits get eaten completely. On my mushroom grow kits.... they are mostly to rural customers, so i am getting hit hard there.
Soooooo my suggestion, like you can add fees for HI/PR etc... we need the same for rural zipcodes, integrating is up to ebay and usps databases, sitting by the wayside and saying ... sellers figure it out, is not the answer
Either you want us to have free shipping, or you cut us out and just let your chinese warehouses sell the products with free shipping. Since apparently they get the $3.95 tiktok shipping rates we wish we got.
in case you wondered, these rates of $5.24 to $7 is not the lowest... you can literally ship the same 4 ounce package on tiktok shipping for $3.75

OP4 days agoI have a very hard time believing that USPS claim that the rural zipcodes are a tiny amount, because it seems almost every 3rd order i am getting is rural. I mean it's been insane today. I am doing mondays mail and i must be on my 5th out of 10 labels so far. And it's not even rural products!

·6 days ago · EditedA partial, experimental workaround for lightweight items under 1 pound is to use Free Shipping on a Shipping Business Policy AND attach a weight-based Shipping Rate Table to that policy that selectively adds a small surcharge on states, or even subdivisions of states, where the new July 2026 rural charges are most likely.
The "Rate Table" applies on top of the base shipping policy only to the specific states, or state subdivisions. Then, the "+per pound" amount can be set to $0 to avoid charging for additional quantity or weight over 1 pound.
I'm using a weight-based Rate Table set to charge $2.95 for AK, HI, US Protectorates to start, but considering adding select subdivisons of states.
Again, you cannot currently apply a Rate Table on zip codes, so this is not a precise / complete workaround. Though, it may be better than nothing to still offer mostly Free Shipping on small / light items, and have some buyers paying to cover living in a remote state or area.
The "Rate Table" allows selecting some subdivisions within a state. For example, it's possible to selectively apply a Rate Table to pieces of MT, ID, TX, like below.

Idaho (East)

Texas (East)
Texas (Houston)
Texas (South)
Texas (West)
ID, MT, and parts of Texas are currently on my radar for an upcharge, at a minimum.
It's unclear how eBay is determining these subdivisions within states, but there's possibly some overlap with the USPS Sectional Center Facility (SCF) ranges.
Note: I tried using the Flat Rate Shipping Rate Table. It worked, but it causes the upcharge to apply for each quantity of the same item, even when a Combined Shipping Rule attempts to avoid the additional item charge.

·6 days agoJust so you know USPS is the carrier. They automatically provide tracking. If USPS or Ebay did what you suggested then there is no proof that the item got delivered to the buyer. Using lower shipping methods as in Media Mail has requirements by the USPS. For many categories that is blocked. There is also Ebay Standard Envelope which also has restriction requirements.

USPS rates vs Ebay rates for Ground Advantage are very different. If I use Ebay shipping labels, approximately 60 - 75% of my shipments show higher ground advantage rates with Ebay shipping. The same dimensions, address, weight and zip are $1.50 to $1.75+ cheaper for EACH parcel weighing between 4 to 12 ounces when using USPS click n' ship directly on the USPS site. Often, Ebay will show a HIGHER "rural" zip code rate for the same zip code that USPS charges the non-rural rate (for Ground Advantage Service when I purchase labels directly on the USPS website). The USPS shipping labels are significantly cheaper than the Ebay shipping labels saving approximately $1.50 to $1.75 PER PARCEL. These savings ARE SIGNIFICANT for sellers and buyers. It would be great if Ebay would match those rates for everyone. It sure looks as though Ebay is generating a profit when sellers purchase shipping labels through Ebay shipping. Let's not forget that Ebay is also taking a portion of the shipping cost paid by the buyer in the form of a percentage fee on every transaction which also drives the shipping costs higher for the buyer. Will Ebay match the shipping rates offered by the USPS to small business????

I compared the price of around 10 rural zip codes on Click N Ship to what I paid on eBay over the last few weeks and the price was exactly the same on eBay as it was on Click N Ship. If you don't have a volume discount do you have an example of a to and from zip code and the price you paid on Click N Ship vs. what was shown on eBay? I am getting 10+ rural zip code orders a week and would love to pass on cheaper shipping to my buyers but I can't seem to replicate the cheaper shipping through USPS that you mentioned.

·1 week agoAs of a few days ago, there was no upcharge for rural ZIP codes when I used my USPS Click-N-Ship Business account. It has been years since I opened my USPS business account, so I am not sure what the process looks like now. OP4 days agoclick n ship is old rates too, just like veeq, its just a matter of time until they find out it's not synced and they start charging the upcharge, maybe should have kept it to yourself lol. but ty! i wish i had known hours ago, could have saved 10-15$ i also set up a business account, and tried to connect it to veeq but nothing is propagating. So ill just use click n ship now for rurals.. until some newman finds this post and gets it fixed.

·1 week agoUSPS Post Office just dropped ounce pricing.
I just went to ship a package on eBay using USPS Ground Advantage and changed the weight from 12 to 4 because I realized I could use a bubble mailer instead of a box. Guess what? The price was the same. I changed it to 1 ounce just to see if it went down, and then tried 15 ounces. The price was still $7.86. I went to the USPS site and it said the same was also $7.86
I found this notice indicating that the Post Office has "discontinued ounce pricing". So the cost to mail a 1-ounce and a 15-ounce item to the same zip code is the same. That is CRAZY and making eBay selling even less attractive and less profitable. At 16 ounces, the price increased to $9.63 per additional ounce. Almost $2.00 difference for the added ounce.
To make matters worse, several years ago, eBay began charging and deducting seller fees from the total sale price, including shipping. That is robbery, and it really hurts even more now.

·1 week agoI use calculate shipping and accurate package dimensions and weight on all of my listings.
I purchased two labels tonight for two Barbies being shipped in identical bubble mailers and weight. I received $8.30 for shipping and the label to for Purcell, OK was $7.46 which is the same as USPS Click-n-Ship (Retail $8.30). I had assumed it is a rural address. It is not!
The other label was to a suburb in Fort Wayne, IN where I received $8.60 for shipping and the label that cost $5.89. USPS Retail is also $8.60 but Click-n-Ship is $7.89.
I sell a lot of low priced items and I can't afford to play this game of shipping roulette never knowing what my labels are going to cost and I am furious with eBay for not making accurate calculations. I have been counting on my 30% +/- discount for eBay labels to help defray the cost of shipping supplies and travel to the post office, etc.
I have been selling on eBay since 1998 and I have NEVER had an issue with shipping until the July 12 changes!

In the first sentence there is a link to a spreadsheet that lists all of the rural zip codes that USPS uses to calculate the higher rates. The 73080 zip code is on that spreadsheet as a rural zip code.
I ship 15-20 packages per day and 99% of what I ship is USPS Ground Advantage packages under 1 lb. I use calculated shipping and I set it up through eBay to pass along my shipping discount to the buyer. Since the changes on July 12th I have not noticed any difference in price for what the buyer pays and what the cost of the label is when I print it on eBay. This is specifically in reference to shipments to Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and the rural zip codes in the spreadsheet linked above.

OP1 week agoWith all changes on ebay and USPS nothing will change unless there is enough outrage, and people defending usps "rural" changes is not going to help things. I get it, we know usps was "failing" but they were failing when packages cost $2 to ship, and now they cost $8 to ship. We have went from $4.50 literally a year ago... to now costing $7-8 to ship a 4 ounce package, that's ABSURD. No business can stay in business and ship a $8 package that used to cost them $4 without increasing the price. A $8 item now costing the customer $16 isn't going to go over too well in such a short amount of time. The problem is certain marketplaces have no solution for this. Hell, it's cheaper for me to use Amazon FBA instead of 3rd party shipping now on there. Literally the cost of selling and shipping an item that is $12 on amazon is cheaper via FBA than myself! I may switch all my walmart inventory as well, it's just not feasible to sell at $7-8 shipping on $12 items

·1 week agoPeople can complain all they want if the USPS is charging a certain amount then that is the amount you as a seller should be charging the buyer. If that reduces sales on Ebay well unfortunately use another platform as you stated.

It might depend on the street because it could be outside the city limits. I did this and the address on the label for which I was charged about $2 more was NOT rural!

Why is eBay charging the seller for the difference in rural rates but not the buyer?
How do we report this to eBay as an issue?

·2 weeks agoIf you are charging your Buyer the "Retail Rates" in your Listings, there is NO Rural Zipcode Exception attached to those rates. The Rural Zipcode discount exceptions are only applied to Online "Commercial Rates" that you pay.

·1 week agoI was explaining why there is a DIFFERENCE. In simple terms I said...if you walk into a Post Office and pay for a Label there is NO Rural "Price" (or Rural distinction for a Label) for the Buyer. It is entirely restricted to Commercial Shipping Rates. Your takeaway is not what I said.

If you use the calculated rates on ebay and use the RETAIL rates shown to buyer, then non rural pay the same as everyone else, but YOU, the seller get charged the rural rate as you're buying the LABEL at Commercial rates.
But if you use the Commercial rates to be shown to the buyer, they get the same rate shown as when you print the label, which means the seller is losing out on the so called ebay discount and is losing money on every label due to fees etc.

·2 weeks ago · EditedMake sense out of this, 3 items exactly the same, I'm shipping from NY zip code 12401 and all items are the same and the package and weight are the same but one going to NH is higher than one going to FL but the other FL is more expensive than the other FL one. When I change the weight the order second in line changes in price but the other 2 do not. There is a problem here and Ebay needs to fix it and more sellers need to report it especially if you offer free shipping.

·2 weeks agoMy first encounter with this showed that the buyer was charged what I now understand to be a non-rural rate yet when I went to make the label my cost was $1.74 higher. I tried GoShippo thinking something weird was happening with eBay, but it did the same thing. If rural zip codes are going to be charged more, I don't understand why it didn't calculate it for the buyer correctly? Instead I was going to cancel the order but decided to ask eBay for help. I was told it was a known issue, to go ahead and purchase the label, and I would see the difference added to my payout. That $1.74 has yet to be seen. Now I have another order awaiting shipping with the same situation. I'm going to look into the other option mentioned in the comments. Thank you for the information!

·2 weeks agoThe average increase for this is between 10% - 15%, so how do we counter it?
A. Veeqo, a shipping service that integrates with ebay, gives you 5% cash back for the first 2 months and costs nothing. Also is not upcharging for rural zip codes yet but i'm sure it will soon. After 2 months you get 1% to 5% cash back depending on the shipping serviced used, and for shipping, this costs nothing, it only costs something if you want it to manage your inventory for you.
B. Chase ink Business preferred, 3% cash back credit card on shipping.

·2 weeks agoIts decimating us on most smaller sales under $40, since ebay loves to fee you for shipping we set most our listings to free shipping now with the roulette wheel of shipping zipcodes anyone's guess i'm losing $2-4 in sales ! But yep ebay is still making money on me while I lose! The cost by buyer location option is not working either as its usually over estimated and we would lose buyers when we tried that years ago. Ebay is almost forcing the American seller out I think they really just want the chinese market just like amazon. Anyone know a way where you can bulk edit all your listings a few dollars at once to cover this nonsense?

·2 weeks agoYou need to switch to calculated shipping in where the cost varies by buyer location. This will charge those buyers w/ rural zip codes the appropriate amount ( you can add a handling fee). Go into your business policies and set up as many shipping policies as needed.
You can also set up combined shipping in your shipping preferences. You also have the choice of giving your buyers eBay's discounted rates ( applies to USPS, UPS, Fed Ex) -- it in Shipping Preferences, under rates & exclusions, go to carrier rate settings.

·1 week agoThese buyers know exactly where they live and have been paying UPS /Fed Ex delivery surcharges for years. USPS is just know catching up. Giving an option of different shipping options can help. On pirateship, I sometimes find UPS is cheaper to these rural zip codes . Also, having combined shipping set up for buyers ( must be calculated- done by weight) so the checkout process is fast and convenient for buyers is a must.

·1 week agoCalculated shipping is not including any additional fees AND I was charged almost $2 more for a label I THOUGHT must be rural. It was NOT! I as Google if street/city/state was considered rural by USPS and it said no. Even on Google Maps you can tell it is a suburban area.

·1 week agoAre you inputting the correct weight incl packaging to your listings ? Set up a few shipping policies in your business policies. There you can add a handling fee to cover the eBay fee on shipping or packaging costs, etc. In shipping preferences you can set up combined shipping discounts so that your buyers have fast & easy checkout.

Suggest you find a shipping service which is not applying the rural surcharge. Veeqo is not at this time. It offers the same or better rates than Ebay shipping does.

It will integrate with Ebay and your orders will be there and marked shipped by Veeqo.
It also offers Bound Printed Matter Postage as Amazon does, which for items which qualify is cheaper than even media mail.
Another seller who is active on both Ebay and Amazon turned me on to it, and although I have not switched over completely, I am using it more each day.
We are not completely helpless in dealing with this postage price increase.

OP1 week ago · Editedveeq as i was using it this morning switched to rural rates.. a 5.50 package is now 6.94 same as shipstation. I literally saw it change in real time while processing some orders, i thought to myself. Maybe it was an error, but i had a few rural orders and i checked their prices on shipstation and veeq at the same time, and yep. it switched... Unless it was just ohio.. Will test it as i get new orders, while veeq's "25-35" cents each label cash back is nice, it slows me down because they don't allow little notes on the labels where is my shipstation adds 3 letters to each labels bottom that tells me what goes in it automatically.
edit, fixed the note part kinda, still not as automated, but it is free vs shipstation. i just wish i could create flats without tracking numbers there

OP1 week agoveeq is now charging rural rates.. 5:40 was old price, now its 6:93 for same zipcode to zipcode rural, i tested it with a custom location $7.69 from my location. 6.93 if i say the shipping location is the destination location. So the savings of $1.50+ is now gone on veeq. still get the cashback for now tho
