USPS Fuel Surcharge
Hi Everyone, Due to recent events (the opening of the Straight Of Hormuz) & with gas prices heading downward (we all hope) - Will USPS still be implementing their 8% fuel surcharge on 4/26 & should they? (opinions). Thanks Everybody! Be Well!

·5 months agoI drove to a postcard show on 3/11 and filled my tank at $2.85. Yesterday I drove to a postcard show and paid $3.85. But a buyer from California told me they are paying $6. The USPS is also sensitive to air fuel prices and you can imagine where that fuel is going first. The force majuer events may continue and direct business locked in pricing may not be assured.
I hear some states base their gas tax on a percent basis, not a fixed amount, Aint' that a sweet windfall expropriated from the citizens!

·5 months agoThe surcharge is not because of the conflict. It is because they have been mismanaged for over 50 years. They are not allowed to make changes that will modernize & cost save their bloated government operations.

·5 months agoWe've officially reached that point where you can not sell something that weighs 1 OZ and must use a non machinable bubble mailer for less than $10. I've been talking about this day for years, we're finally there.

·5 months agoI can’t get guaranteed, but those USPS prices should be heavily influenced by hedging activities. So, probably not feeling the full impact of gas price increases, but they’ll feel the impact of future’s market changes.

·5 months agoGas has already cost USPS that extra $1+ per gallon for a over a month by the 26th so of course they will STILL impose it to 'at least' recoup this past over expense.
Then it will take about 1 year for that extra $1 to go away by the Gas Companies. Then they will have some other excuse why gas has to go back up or remain so the USPS 'surcharge' will remain forever.

Nor is there evidence of gas prices heading downward.

·5 months agoAn 8% surcharge yet we only receive 7% of our oil from the middle east. We never had a surcharge between 2020 and 2024 when fuel prices skyrocketed. Seems like price gouging to me.

·5 months agoRetired letter carrier here. If you peeps only knew how screwed up USPS really is! Worst run organization in the world! Between 2022 to 2024, USPS paid out 866 million dollars in grievances for not following the contracts of all labor unions within USPS! That's right, peeps. Burnt money wasted because there is NO accountability by management at all. This would never happen if USPS was run like a private company. Management would be fired! Getting back to the subject, I believe fuel surcharge will become permanent next year. Don't forget, in October thru January, USPS will implement their temporary holiday surcharge as well. Welcome to mismanagement! Pay up!!!

·5 months agoI wouldn't expect them to go away. Remember the supply chain issues during the covid debacle? Supply chains restored and prices didn't come down to pre-covid prices......................

·5 months agoIt will take effect as scheduled and last for the rest of the year. No matter what happens in the Middle East.
There is no agreement on the terms of the ceasefire. The Israeli's and our government said it did not apply to Lebanon.
This ceasefire is simply a two week reprieve for Iran to negotiate an acceptable deal with the US.

·5 months agoSo Trump starts a war because Israel told him to, which causes Iran to shut down the Strait of Hormuz as leverage.
Then after negotiations failed and Iran refused to reopen it, his response is to shut down the Strait of Hormuz also.
If Trump is trying starve Iran with this move, it will hit the global economy even harder.
If Only we could go back to the deal Obama / Kerry negotiated, which took about a year, NOT 20 hours!

There is a toll for accessing the strait that did not exist before.
How does that math work out?

·5 months agoIt's expected that fuel prices will remain high for a year or two. Once they get it up they like to keep it up, profits and all.

Historically what I have seen is that prices go up quickly but take longer to come down, if they come down at all.

·5 months agoI'm going to assume they will never remove the surcharge.
Rather, it will become permanent, even if oil prices go down. They may drop it a small amount to appease the commoners, (search Canada's GST as an example). They have been waiting for a way to add a surcharge, this was the perfect time to do it.
