UPS has some cost adjustments on your shipping labels.
I shipped a large sign for $7. It was adjusted to $18. I now worry UPS adjusts too many shipments.
Isn't 64 ounces = 4 pounds?????
The UPS adjustment stated:
Weight on label: 64.0OZ
Billable weight: 4.0LB

What were your package dimensions?
64 oz = 4 lb so there was no weight adjustment on billing. Must be a surcharge for another reason like size or nonstandard packaging.
What is "cardboard with folded edges"? Sounds nonstandard?

OP2 years agoabout 40" x 20" x 1". I guess UPS considers folded edges "non-standard".
I watched videos where the pro sign sellers use the same method of folded cardboard.
The adjustment was listed as "additional handling".
Lessons learned for my next sign.

·2 years agoWas it encased in packing tape? Either way, UPS in its "sole and unlimited discretion" decided that type of packaging required additional handling. As you said, lesson learned for next time. $11 isn't too bad. I've seen sellers get hit with $1500 surcharges because they exceeded allowable dimensions by an inch which is stated in UPS terms & conditions. 🌋

40.9 Additional Handling Charge
An Additional Handling charge will be assessed for any Package that requires special handling, as determined by UPS in its sole and unlimited discretion, including, but not limited to:

– Any Package with an outer shipping container not made of corrugated cardboard, including but not limited to canvas, leather, metal, wood, hard plastic, soft plastic (e.g., plastic bag), or expanded polystyrene foam (e.g., Styrofoam);
– Any article that is encased in a soft-sided pack (e.g., poly bag or bubble mailer) that exceeds 18 inches along its longest side or 14 inches along its second-longest side or 6 inches in height;
– Any Package with an outer shipping container covered in shrink wrap or stretch wrap;
– Any Package bound with metal, plastic or cloth banding, or that has wheels, casters, handles, or straps (including Packages where the outer surface area is loosely wrapped or where the contents protrude outside the container surface);
– Any cylindrical-like item, including but not limited to barrels, buckets, drums, mailing tubes, or pails;
– Any Package routed through UPS's irregular package sortation process, including but not limited to Packages 1 inch or less in height;
– Any Package with its longest side exceeding 48 inches or its second-longest side exceeding 30 inches;
– Any Package with its length (longest side of the package) plus girth [(2 x width) + (2 x height)] combined exceeding 105 inches;
– Any domestic Package with an actual weight greater than 50 pounds;
– Any international Package with an actual weight greater than 70 pounds;
– Each Package in a UPS Hundredweight Service® or UPS® Ground with Freight Pricing Shipment where the average weight per Package is greater than 50 pounds and the weight for each Package is not specified in the UPS Shipping System used; and
– Each Package in a UPS® Standard or international Shipment (excluding UPS Worldwide Express Freight® Service Shipments) where the average weight per Package is greater than 70 pounds and the weight for each Package is not specified in the UPS Shipping System used.

USPS has a $7, over 30" surcharge, for the 40" length.

Something other than "cardboard"?
Too much tape?
Claim the size is different than what you entered?
Those are the reasons you'll be given, and there's little you can do about it (well, nothing actually)

OP2 years agoAgreed. UPS store accepts, but does not comment or measure.
It was cardboard with folded edges. $7 seemed too cheap for a 40" sign.
I will stick with USPS if I have another sign to ship.
