UPS had eBay charge us $1913.43 in shipping overages
I am beyond **bleep**. Just saw a charge on our bank account today for an antique mirror I sold and shipped through UPS. They charged us 1913.43!!! They said the package weighed 193 pounds… There is absolutely no way! I originally bought the mirror off of eBay, and the guy packed it in 2 thin, cut down TV boxes and half the glass was broken. My husband was able to fix most of it and we resold it. He packaged it absolutely perfectly… Even dropped it off at UPS with the shipper he knows. Then we see this today. I had to file a dispute on eBay as a seller. This is absolutely illegal.

·6 months agoYou triggered the over size rate. They have a minimum weight they bill based on the package size even if the item weighs less. Packages above the limit get that.
We are all scared to use UPS or Fedex as they both do that.

·6 months agoJust don't use UPS or FedEx through eBay. Use a service that gives you the ability to dispute overcharges, and always pay for shipping with a credit card.

·6 months agoHi @taant_66 . Can you post a screenshot of the cost adjustment details and expand the section on the bottom right that says see cost breakdown (highlighted below in green). Black out order #, tracking #, and buyer ID and post a screenshot.
In your case, running some crude numbers, you accurately paid the Large Package surcharges upfront.
The issue is UPS is billing you for being over the maximum limits - that surcharge is a whopping $1,875 - so my guess is UPS is claiming your dimensions were larger than stated.
UPS did not claim your package weighed 193 lbs - they said the billable weight is 193 lbs. Billable weight is whichever is greater between actual weight and dimensional weight. You already paid for a 90 lb billable weight upfront based on your dimensions and the large package surcharge.
Your stated dimensions of 72 x 36 x 10 come out to a total of 164" in Length + Girth.
Please tell us how you measured and/or obtained those measurements. Were they printed on the box? If printed on the box, those were inner dimensions, not outer dimensions, which means you'd have just barely exceeded those max limits.
Also common is for a package to get slightly skewed or bulge in transit which can bump out dimensions. As of July 2025, UPS rounds up even a fraction of an inch. So if they said that 10" was actually 10.1", that gets rounded up to 11" and bumps your L+G to 166" which exceeds the limit of 165".
Bottom line: Never ship something so close to the max limits. Always round up dimensions. Leave several inches of grace for skewing or bulges.
Over Maximum Limits – Packages with an actual Weight of more than 150 pounds, or that exceed 108 inches in Length or exceed a total of 165 inches in Length plus Girth [(2 x Width) + (2 x Height)] combined, as measured to determine their billable weight, are not accepted for transportation
Because the label was purchased through eBay's UPS account, you cannot dispute direct with UPS. The only way to dispute is to have eBay customer service submit the dispute on your behalf. From there it's up to UPS to review their internal info and either approve or reject your dispute. If they find your package truly was over the stated dimensions, even by fractions of an inch, they will not approve the refund. I wish you luck with this.

·6 months agoVery sorry this happened to you. UPS and FedEx are notorious for tacking on "extra charges" after label has been printed on EBAY. Below is information from EBAY that might explain why "large package surcharge" was tacked on.

UPS will apply a Large Package Surcharge for packages with the following characteristics:
Minimum billable weight of 90 lbs will be applied for all packages that incur a Large Package Surcharge.

·6 months agoSay what you will about the United States Postal Service, I've never had them insert an extra $1500 of fees post-shipment. Shame on UPS. I hope you're able to get this reversed. If they are unwilling, perhaps try contacting your state department of consumer protection. Good luck.

·6 months agoMy commercial FedEx is $550 Ground from California to New York. $330 of that is the oversize charge. Remember UPS/FedEX charge us the retail rates on surcharges not the discounted ebay rate. FedEx Express saver is $998. $100 is fuel surcharge. I guessed at the actual weight of 45#, but that doesnt matter since it is dimensional anyway. I assume you shipped it UPS Ground?
This is a major problem using UPS and FedEx on ebay, we just see an estimate, we dont see the actual cost or the potential surcharges, and they can add up. I only calculate my FedEx cost because they are very similar to ebay's rates. But the $1913 overage is steep. The above $550 included all charges, assuming no irregular box or anything unusual.
A TV box should be a FOL 72 x 10 x 36. Fight it on the fact that a 36 x 72 x 10 box doest actually exist in the real world..it is impossible for a box with those dimensions to fold up properly. So how can you (UPS) possible charge me for something that doesnt exist? Unfortunately, you need to talk directly with UPS to make that claim, and on ebay you cant go direct

OP6 months agoThat’s about how much I paid when I originally bought it. It was close to $453.00 for shipping. There’s no way it cost $1913.45 to go from Arkansas to California. My husband even shipped it at a small hub where he knows the owners. Filed a dispute on eBay… Having difficulty filing a claim on UPS… Probably will have to call them

2nd time you mentioned filing a bank dispute. If your bank can somehow reclaim your money, the eBay selling account will be like yesterday’s newspaper, gone, unless you pay up or eBay will turn it over to collections.
Never ship very large items (furniture or the like) through Fedex or UPS. Use a carrier like R&L that specializes in freight. Probably would have costed about as much as you paid UPS.
ADDENDUM: I see you got smart and took down those other items that were quite large and an issue to ship.
If you are ever interested in how to ship via freight for an eBay sale, I can fill you in on how I do it. Just tag me in a post.
The appropriate thing to do is to file the dispute of surcharges to UPS thru eBay.
Someone will be along to share exactly how to file the dispute of surcharges through eBay. The charges actually came from UPS to eBay and eBay charged your account.

More than likely the weight is dimensional so the billable weight will be greater than the actual weight. Do you have the details of the shipment, box size, actual weights, service? I have no ability to process a $1913.00 surcharge on shipping, but with more info we might get a basic idea.
Follow the guidelines for UPS disputes with ebay, you need their help on this

OP6 months ago36x72x10. What’s funny is I bought this mirror on eBay and it was destroyed in shipping and we used UPS and it was no more than $453.00 in shipping.
