Suggestion for shipping international
Hello all,
I have successfully shipped folding pocket knives to Germany and Switzerland, but I keep having packages to other Countries such as Canada shipping back with the only note saying "prohibited goods". I use the proper HS Tariff, and according to USPS, they are packaged correctly. Local laws in each country state theses type of knives are legal to own. I now have 6 orders being returned to me.
There isn't any sort of label USPS provides, they just have guidelines for packaging. Has any one experienced this and knows what I might be doing wrong? HS code 8211930035 is what should be used.
Thank you,
Kyle

OP1 year agoThank you all for the replies so far. I've now had one to New Zealand, one to Chile, and one to Argentina flagged as prohibited. I feel like there is a major bug in the system or something with the Sinco Customs company that eBay uses. After a long phone call with eBay earlier, they suggested I don't use the eBay International option but instead one of the other carriers or USPS options. Ironic.
Unfortunately FedEx to Argentina is close to $200 and nearly $300 for NZ, so I'll need to use USPS either way for them. FedEx is confident they can get the packages to Canada and thankfully that ranges from $30-50.

·1 year agoAlthough there are prohibitions on the importation of knives to some countries, there are also prohibitions on certain trademarks and other factors which are violation of the laws in the destination country.
HST codes are used to determine tariffs and are separate from whether importation is legal.

Besides what the others have written, better brace yourself for the new European Union General Product Safety Regulations, which begin December 13 this year, as follow --

There are items in the States that are legal to own, but you can't import them from another state.

Even if the item is legal for someone to own, importing one into their country may not be allowed. Your packaging and paperwork may not be the issue. Canada has recently added certain types of knives to their prohibited list. While yours may not be included, current online discussions indicate the Canadian Border Services Agency is basically not allowing any knives to be imported.
My opinion only-- I suspect they just don't want to have to open every knife package and do a physical inspection.
Given you have had multiple packages returned you may want to discontinue sales into Canada. Things may change in the future.
