Shipping costs on larger, heavier packages vs what I'm seeing others listed for? | Shipping

At work, I list on various formats including ebay for the company, one of the things they do is huge buy outs of collectibles and antiques.Today a truck load of antique, (1920's or older in this case), type writers, cash registers, and sewing machines.I was asked to find the most suitable means to safely ship each item. Most are in the 40 to 150lb range. The heaviest items are freight only in most cases, but its the 40lb or so boxes that I'm having trouble with.For an example, one item is a 1920 or so typewriter, (looks almost new), which is in a 20x16x12" wood lined cardboard box secured to the inside of the wooden inner box. Its a very secure package.It weights in at 39.6lbs.In looking at other similar items listed, I see many listed for $20 shipping, now many are just parts models and priced cheaply but how does one ship a 40lb box 3,000 miles across the country for $20?The best prices I'm showing through eBay are $117 to the farthest zip or $70 to the half way point.(I got $65 to the same zip code). USPS is higher, about $140 cross country with less savings if it goes local. I know people will look at those other listings and think we're ripping them off, but is there a cheaper, safer way to ship a large heavy box like this? I'm also leery about Fed Ex lately because they no longer have a local depot here, the nearest Acme supermarket is their drop point and they refuse to give a receipt and all the packages get piled up in the vestibule out front where hundreds of people walk by them before the Fed Ex truck comes to get them.
