Shipping costs (buyer pays for shipping - BUT I end up paying more than buyer pays?
I sold an item. Ebay tells me and figures the weight of the product. It knows (I guess through AI and the title). I put the weight in and I enter the dimensions. It gives a quote what the buyer will pay but I thought that is adjusted depending from where the item is shipped to? I may have not done this correctly. I swear that Ebay states buyer will pay according to zip code and weight -- it's automatically adjusted on a sale. Anyways the buyer paid $61 for shipping and I end up paying $79 -- I take a hit for almost $20. Did I do something wrong here?

·5 months agoYou weight, package & provide dimensions in advance of listing the item. It's part of the actual listing process. There is below zero chance you can blame anyone but you. Next time actually do what everyone else does & be responsible.

·5 months agoSimilar happened to me today.
In the listing I entered dimension of box as marked on box (20 X 10 X 7).
Measurement of outside of boxes tend to be bigger then box size marked. Box measured (20 X 10 X 7.75) inch so that made the last measurement round to 8 inch and that cost me near $5 extra.

·5 months agoFor most boxes, the measurements shown are the inside dimensions. eBay branded boxes from the @ebayshippingsupplies, in my experience, have the outside dimensions. Of course, if you are using FedEx or UPS, they always round up to the nearest whole number. It is too easy to have a piece of tape stick out during shipment, so I still round up even on the those eBay boxes when shipping with through those two carriers.

·5 months agoYep, this is what I have learned as well. Most of my items ship under two pounds and well under a cubic foot so the box size is not too critical. On the larger items it make a big difference to add on a inch. I noticed boxes are mostly correct on two sides but the side the flap folds they tend to measure to the next each.
I have some of the larger boxes (26 X 13 X 8.) that are glued together poorly so that one side measurement can be off 3/4 inch. I have been disassembling these and regluing them because it is a substantial increase for the next inch.

·5 months agoAs @christworks referenced, it sure sounds like a case of shipping weight & dimensions being pre-filled in all the fields of the listing coupled with a newe/er seller that does not realize this is an intrusive recommendation and NOT a directive.
As previously stated, eBay price and shipping cost recommendations are seldom correct.
They now, however, have migrated from a side recommendation to actually pre-filling data fields.
I could see how a brandy new seller might think this is an "override" directive from the platform.
Unfortunately, the OP needs to eat this one & asap review all current listings for accuracy.
Best of Luck

·5 months ago@tyoungin Correct me if I am wrong, but when you say "Ebay tells me and figures the weight of the product," do you mean the suggestion or pre-filled information eBay showed you at the time you created the listing?
eBay has no way to know how much the item will weigh or what the dimensions the box you ship an item in will be. You may not even have an idea when you list it (though you should!) You never want to use anything eBay suggests to you. I wish they didn't even do that as it is misleading to new sellers. You'll have to eat the loss on the shipping. If you have made the same mistake for other listings, you need to go back and correct them because you will likely have further losses if you don't.

·5 months agoOn the mattress topper it appears you used Flat shipping.....that means no matter where your buyer lives they pay the same rate. You need to use calculated shipping and put in the weight and dimensions when you list your item. eBay goes off the info you give them.

·5 months agoNo they do not.
This is something you have to include in your listing. It's below the item description.

·5 months agoNo; they don't.
I have NO IDEA where you get that.
YOU need to input 'weight and dimensions' using CALCULATED shipping. Then it will figure the cost depending on the distance from you.
Period.
Everything else you 'believe' is happening, obviously is NOT happening.
