I sold an item on ebay not knowing the exact weight. I took item to FedEx where the buyer preferred. I scanned the QR code. Left package went on about my day. Wok the following morning to a charge of $1800+ for shipping a $175 item. Does that make sense to anyone? Ebay has given me the complete runaround on this and refuse to release my $1500 of selling to me due to a $1300 remaining balance with ebay. Ebay is an absolute scam and a racket. I filed a report with FCC but I doubt that will yield any results. So basically, I paid to give my items away for free. I paid people to take my belongings. Screw you ebay you are a scam.

Creating an incorrect label, bringing the QR code to FEDEX and assuming all would be well was evidence that you did not give any thought to what you were doing or care what the result was going to be.
Your attitude had consequences.

·6 months agoHOW is this ebay's fault ? Ebay did not charge you the shipping cost..... FedEx did.
YOU provided the FedEx shipping option on your listing. the buyer had no other choice but to select the option YOU provided.
You did not input the correct shipping weight onto the listing.
Ebay is not pulling a scam on you. You just thought you could get away with an inaccurate weight and no one would notice.

In a way we could look at it as if the OP was the one scamming FedEx and eBay. Hoping Fedex would just ship it at the cost they wanted and then not charging enough to reduce FVF's paid to eBay.

·6 months agoWow...we can all sell....but as sellers on-line we all need to know how to ship...
When FedEx and UPS see that "ebay" on the shipping label, they expect us to know what we are doing. If you don't know what you are doing, take it to the counter pay retail and have the clerks help you.
Could you imagine if it was a more expensive item and the buyer filed an INAD? Another $1800 to return or you just forfeit the item

Fedex rates are determined by the service, destination, weight, and dimensions. This part is 100% on you.

You should only ship using the carriers that you offered to the buyer, not the carriers that the buyer "prefers".

That depends entirely upon the service, destination, weight, and dimensions and the reason that Fedex gave for the surcharge. If this item was the 6' long seated rowing machine you sold for $175, that was probably an oversize item.
I scanned the QR code.
The QR reflects the service, weight, and dimensions you entered on the listing, not the actual service, weight, and dimensions of the package. What were the service, weight, and dimensions you put on the listing?

No, eBay is not a scam. Your dilemma is a result of you trying to sell without finding out how to sell. You made an expensive mistake because you did not list/sell this item correctly.

·6 months agoSorry about your mess up but eBay has no control over which shipping carrier a seller chooses. The seller needs to read and understand the carriers terms and polices before they. jumped. It seems odd that you were only made aware of the shipping charge the next morning. I've always had to pay the carrier for the label before I received the label.
BTW your listing states this shipping charge - where did that come from?
On the bright side -- at least your buyer gave you Positive Feedback for this transaction..

Had you entered accurate weight and dimensions to start, eBay would have blocked you from purchasing a label because you were over the limits; it would have avoided this situation.
I'm sorry you were hit with such an expensive lesson in shipping. If you plan to sell anything else, I suggest reading eBay's many help pages about shipping as they cover basics like this.

·6 months agoYeah that def does not sound right. $1800 shipping for a $175 item. Most likley its a billing error or FedEx put the wrong weight or service on the label after scanning QR code.
First thing you check the order shipping details on eBay and see what weight/service it shows. Then contact eBay support and tell them FedEx scanned the QR code and you did not enter the weight. They can usually dispute the charge.
You can also call FedEx billing and ask what weight and dimensions they charged you for. Sometimes the system marks it as freight by mistake. Do not ignore it .

·6 months agoThe cost of an item has no bearing whatsoever on the cost to ship an item. The seller sold and shipped a huge water rower. Some of the ones I'm seeing online ship in two boxes. That should give you an idea of how large this thing is. The seller charged $52 to ship it. I could not ship my old computer for $50 through FedEx.

·6 months agoHi @khalidmasoodmalik . I realize how outrageous it seems, but it's legit. The seller (shipper) here did not provide accurate weight or dimensions and this is what caused the expensive cost adjustment.
Your shipping options may be different in Pakistan, but in the US this is how it works when you exceed FedEx or UPS maximum limits.
The carrier reserves the right to refuse the package, dispose of the package, or accept and deliver the package and bill the shipper the corresponding surcharge.
This is not about "oversized" surcharges as some people here have mentioned. This is about being over the maximum limits. Both UPS and FedEx bumped the surcharge for exceeding max limits to nearly $2k last year.
With FedEx specifically, it's called an Unauthorized Package Charge.
FedEx Ground Unauthorized Package Charge
A charge of $1,875 per package will be assessed for the following conditions:
• Any package measuring more than 108 inches in length.
• Any package measuring more than 165 inches in length and girth combined.
• Any package weighing more than 150 lbs.
These packages are unauthorized and may be refused, returned to the shipper, or disposed of by FedEx. However, at our sole discretion, packages may be accepted and delivered. Rating will be based on the greater of the package’s actual rounded weight or dimensional weight, subject to a 90-lb. minimum billable weight.
Package shape and dimensions may change during transit, which can affect the package’s dimensional weight and surcharge eligibility. If the dimensions change during transit, FedEx may make appropriate adjustments to the shipment charges at any time.

·6 months agoThe cost of an item has absolutely nothing to do with the cost of shipping said item.
That row machine is around 6 to 8 feet long. That should have been sold as local pick up only due to it's size and low value. The seller had $25.95 as the cost of shipping so they obviously had no idea what they were doing.
It sucks, I get it, and believe me I would like to blame FedEx for this because they are corrupt to the core but, the fault for this one is on the seller, not FedEx, and certainly not eBay.

·6 months ago@dereks_55 eBay isn't a scam. You did not take the time to learn how it works and thought you could make some quick cash. That's your fault, not eBay's.
Since you didn't read up on how shipping works, you probably did not read that new and infrequent sellers have up to 30-day holds placed on their funds. eBay does that for reasons just like this. Assuming the numbers you provided are accurate, you should get any balance leftover 30-days after the delivery of the water rower.
It is a very costly mistake. I'm sorry it happened. Most people make mistakes when it comes to shipping, though yours is abnormally high.
If you decide to keep selling, stick to items that will fit into a 12x12x12 inch box or smaller, at least until you understand what to do. If you are going to list large items, do them as local pick-up only. You are near a big city and will get some interest on those larger items and won't have to deal with packing them.

Your exercise equipment exceeded the maximum weight and dimension limits for FedEx. As a result you were billed the surcharge for exceeding those limits.
That item should have been shipped LTL/Freight or, more appropriate for a new seller, been listed as "local pickup only."
You can't generate a shipping label with random weight and dimensions and expect it to just work out. You need to be precise with weight and dimensions, declaring irregular, hazmat, or anything else applicable.
