Returned card wanting more postage

Have been selling baseball cards for a few years and have not had any issues. Had a card returned saying it needed additional postage . When I went to post office to ask why they told me because it was in a hard sleeve. I have sent over 400 cards This Way and have never had any issues.wondering if anything is changing or if anyone else has had issues.

Yes, sorting machines are getting MUCH faster. To quote the current USPS DMM 101 on flexibility requirements: "does not bend easily when subjected to a transport belt tension of 40 pounds around an 11-inch diameter turn". Older machines required bending around a 16" wheel. Most top loaders could handle that most of the time. The more machines that get replaced, the more top loaders will be rejected and returned or squeezed right out of the envelope.

I use semi rigid sleeves without problems.

We have had a few cards returned here and there for extra postage. We have often thought it to be an individual postal employee because it would always happen when we used a different post office.

When this occured, we would have to purchase another label, and then send the card out again - usually without issues the second time.

Keep in mind that just because you sent cards a particular way before over 400 times doesn't mean those items didn't have the correct postage. There could be someone new at your post office now who is checking packages or it was shipped to a post office where there was a person checking packages as to before they weren't checked. It just varies. Now you know there is additional postage required.

I avoid hard sleeves for that very reason, they do get caught in the machines sometimes and some postal employees have a problem with them. I now use the gaming sleeves designed for magic cards with a junk card on either side of the good card. I still never have a damaged one, it is cheaper than top loaders and I also have never had one returned for extra postage.

At the bare minimum always tape the card/sleeve off center, do not put it in the middle. I alternate left and right so my stack of envelopes ends up looking uniform.
