Prepaid package dropped off at post office, no one scan by USPS after 8 days by now. Already 2 days late than estimated delivery date. Talked to post office station manager who made no effort to help. Called USPS service number, only machine answer, never able to reach a real person to take information. Contacted on USPS.COM, says tracking number not eligible for an inquiry. Before, could submit an inquiry for a no scanned package. The inquiry can give the USPS network an alert. Tracking would be updated soon after.
USPS changed the policy. So if a dropped off package doesn't have one scan, USPS takes no responsibility for losing the package, it might be stolen by a staff?

·3 years agoPackages that are just thrown on the counter do not get scanned...they get tossed in a big bin. Clerks are busy and do not have the time to watch your packages sitting on the counter. I stand in line and see people drop off their packages all the time on the counter at my post office in San Francisco. If your package does not get scanned by someone along the way after it is thrown in the bin...I don't think blaming the USPS for stealing your package is very nice. If you ever waited in line at the counter you can see what goes on. We are all busy in life...but standing in line waiting for a clerk to scan your package and get a receipt will save you a headache in the future.

I believe all packages left on the counter/thrown in the bin do get scanned the same day if they meet the posted outgoing mail cutoff time. At least they do at my USPS - for the most part. I was told all packages with tracking are scanned (even though I know for a fact they sometimes miss the initial scan).
I self-scan eBay prepaid packages at the Self-Serve Kiosk and dump directly into the bins (other customers leave packages on the counter). I rarely don't see the official acceptance scan on the same day. I have always received another scan at some point for the past couple of years. So, 100% on-time delivery with eBay and good for insurance claims with USPS - and no long lines 🙄

·3 years agoWe don't have that at my San Francisco Post Offices..."self-serve kiosk"....but we do have more than a couple of clerks working at our post offices who can scan packages. I think the smaller towns might have a "self-serve kiosk"...but only have one clerk working in their post office at any one time.
In any case, I would say the USPS does a great job and would never say package was stolen by staff.

·3 years agoI live in a very rural area of south Louisiana. There are 2 small post offices near me none of them have a self scan kiosk. I asked at one PO about the kiosk the clerk looked at me as if I were nuts.

Really? I've been on eBay for over 20 years. When I went to college Windows 1.0 didn't exist. We are talking about a computer screen, scale and scanner where you can self-weigh and purchase postage. I thought USPS Kiosks have been around for many years now. I think it's been just a couple years that the ability to scan prepaid postage was added. I am surprised the clerk looked at you as if you were nuts.

·3 years agoMy experience with the USPS has been great. According to the USPS "San Francisco and Peninsula Post Offices" info pages "Many local Post Offices have 24-hour self-service kiosks in the lobby" as we do in Indianapolis. I don't know how the determination is made to provide kiosks or how many post offices don't have them. Having the 24-hour kiosks is great - especially for scanning prepaid packages to meet eBay requirements for on-time shipping.

·3 years agoYou can't do a blanket statement like this.. at the post office in my town (village) EVERYTHING gets scanned in. Each post office IS different. The OP needs to bring the parcels to the counter and get them scanned in and get a receipt. You are in San Francisco, a major city. So things are different in smaller towns.
Of course, the OP's Ebay handle suggests they are in NYC... so they may need to stand in line and make sure their stuff is scanned in AND get a receipt

·3 years agoAnd then there are the offices that "will not" scan a pre-paid package. NYC comes to mind.
Life is good where I am. My carriers, and the offices that I use (7-8 different ones) without hesitation, do 100% scanning upon presentation of pre-paid packages.
ETA one larger office that I go to "may" have the "self-serve kiosK", but that is the one I visit the least frequently, and I do not know if they do. I will have to take a look. Never used one.

Hopefully your package will eventually appear. I have had packages (rarely) not get scanned until delivery at destination.
If you dropped off a package and it NEVER gets scanned, then eBay and the USPS will both come to the same conclusion (even if you know you dropped off the package):
- You are mistaken, you never dropped off the package.
- Any insurance claims will be denied if you don't have at least one official package scan as it will be assumed the USPS never received the package.
I self-scan prepaid packages at the USPS, which counts for eBay proof of on time shipping (lines too long to wait for desk scan). For insurance purposes package still need one more official scan from the USPS. That being said, it's been years since I have seen a package left at the USPS never getting a scan (Lost/Stolen/My Imagination?). 🙄

·3 years agoSeems logical that a package that shows no proof of being "in possession of the carrier" (any carrier) should not be eligible for any "inquiry" process.
A package may have been stolen.
A package could still be in a sack someplace.
A package could have never been dropped off.

·3 years agoI’m confused, you dropped off a prepaid package and didn’t get a scan receipt? I always have the clerks at my local PO scan packages. I never leave the post office without one.
