Postal Services in India, Europe to Suspend Ship of Packages to U.S.

"Letters, books, gifts and small parcels worth less than $100. will continue to be exempt.

Many European postal services say they are pausing deliveries now because they cannot guarantee the goods will enter the U.S. before August 29th."

"If you have something to send to America, you should do it today".

It was only a few countries a few days ago.

But more and more countries are jumping on the bandwagon.

Technically, only gifts worth less than $100 are exempt from tariffs. If the package is a commercial shipment, there is no exemption.

Customs will have to determine the worth of each item as well as whether it is commercial or personal. It will be a disaster.

Yes, it is going to be a nightmare at the U.S. Customs office because they will have to process all packages and assign the correct tariff amount for each country. I imagine this could hold packages up for months.

No, that won't be done at U.S.. Customs.

It has to be done by the originating postal service, and that is why they are having to suspend shipments to the USA. I fully expect that ALL postal shipments of commercial packages will be affected. Some couriers are as well.

The executive order 14324 suspending de minimis, requires that international postal packages must be sent Delivered Duty Paid (DDP) which means that the sender has to prepay the tariff or the per-package cost. At the moment, most (all?) global postal services are not able to do this, so they are suspending shipments of goods to the USA. Post offices throughout Europe, UK, Australia, etc. have posted announcements about this. Canada Post has sent messages to their business clients (including eBay).

Also there is no mechanism in place to allow global sellers to collect this additional cost from the buyers.

The per-package charge varies, depending on the tariff rate assessed for that country, between $80 to $200.

'of commercial packages'....Curious...not using any shipping labels(eBay) and just using stamps or taking packages to a post office and using their postage...wonder if those packages would make it to USA.
