So I sold an item for 67$ typically I put free shipping because shipping shouldn't had been more than 20$ but this buyer has an APO address which shipping is about 41 $ which in my opinion is not worth it anymore. Should I just cancel it and refund them the money. I even tried printing with FedEx since it would only been about 20 but no it only wants usps which in my opinion 41 dollars for 67$ item is totally not worth it.

There was no $15 surcharge. I think there was an error somewhere in weight, dimensions, or service selected - a discrepancy from what was posted here vs what was selected on the label page. Occam's razor.

@wastingtime101 Just curious, both you & @nobody*s_perfect said $8.40 for the excess length. My admittedly high level search said $4 or $15 depending on the length, which is exactly what my memory said, the shorter excess was $4 & the higher one was near $18 or $20. It looks like he was charged an extra $15, which is exactly what my high level search said he s/b charged for a 48" length item. Where does this $8.40 come from? I've never heard of that. Not saying I'm right, just trying to learn since a search told me he s/b charged $15 & he was.

There are different surcharges for Priority and Ground Adv. Read it on the DMM Price List under each service level.

There's some kind of issue here on the user's end as they should not be seeing a $40+ rate based on package weight/dim provided- hopefully they will follow up and provide a screenshot so they are not overpaying or purchasing the wrong label. Hard to help at this point without the screenshot. Could be a typo on weight/dim on label page, or wrong service selected. Unclear unless we get more info.

For a 48x6x6 package weighing 7lb the range for Ground Adv (on eBay) is $16.17 - $25.21 and Priority is $27.77 - $90.92 (which includes up to zone 9 - to zone 8 rural it caps at $52.17). The seller should not be seeing a rate higher than $25.21 based on weight/dim/service provided in this thread. That includes the surcharge.

Why not go straight to USPS? My source for the $8.40 (and probably wastingtime's as well) was their official rates publication, Notice 123:

The $15 quote is probably an obsolete rate for Priority Mail which currently has an $18 surcharge for over 30 inches.

The package dimensions of 48x6x6 just happens to be exactly one cubic foot. So if somebody at USPS (or their machinery) decided that it actually was 48x6x7, then the rate would be the dimensional rate for 13 pounds.

It's the 48" that's the issue, there's a $15 USPS surcharge for that. That's on you for not knowing that, it's been in place for years. Also, it has NOTHING to do with the APO, that surcharge is for anywhere! I just posted abut the length surcharge for you, 2 replies above with details.

The surcharge I think its only for usps like I said I only ship big items with FedEx and UPS, so this whole forcing to usps for me just seems a bit unfair. But next time I'll put no free shipping on big items. And make them pay

That may be. I'm not sure, I only use USPS & yeah, you do have to use USPS for APO/FPO. In my experience of almost 30 years though, I've maybe had 1/2 dozen of these in all that time. You probably won't get another one for years.

Yup, it doesn't cost more, it costs the same as to anywhere else. I also think you underestimated & it's your mistake, you need to ship it. Is it the workout machine? If so, it may have had surcharges for the length, which applies to anywhere, has nothing to do with it being an APO. Depending on the length of the item, there are 2 categories of surcharges, one is like $4 extra & the other is like $18 or 20 extra.

If you cancel it, you will get a Defect on your account & you are allowed very few defects, you may find your account closed.

Here's the AI overview for the length surcharges:

USPS charges a non-standard fee for packages that exceed 22 inches in length. If the length is between 22 and 30 inches, a $4.00 surcharge is applied. If the length is greater than 30 inches, the surcharge increases to $15.00. Additionally, a $15.00 surcharge may be applied if the package's volume exceeds 2 cubic feet.

You're doing the right thing. You'd have had to pay the $15 surcharge even if you mailed it next door. Better to be out $15 than to lose your account.

I would highly reccomend Calculated Shipping, that way you never have to worry about this. Just put in the weight AND the dimensions & it will do it all for you automatically. As you sadly discovered, the dimensions are important even if it's NOT over the length surcharge amount. Dimensions come into play with USPS over 1 pound now.

APO is "Army Post Office" so you can only ship via USPS.

I suspect that you have underestimated the postage cost for that item. You should check what it would cost to ship to a ZIP Code near you or on the east coast; it's probably way more than $20 to any location. APO goes by ZIP Code.

Could you please share the package weight and dimensions, and the buyer's ZIP Code?

How big is that item? USPS Ground Advantage has a surcharge of $8.40 for packages over 30 inches long.

You said heavy item, then said 6 lbs - is that a typo @ladsm10 ?

Did you enter a 6 lb weight on the listing? If so, that could be why you're restricted to 6 lb on the customs form, I'm not sure.

You can always buy the label from pirateship.com if you're having trouble on eBay.

APO/FPO/DPO size/weight limit are the same as any other USPS package - 70 lbs and 130" length+girth for Ground Advantage.

For a 6 lb item measuring 48x6x6 the Ground Adv cost ranges from $16.07 - $24.07 with eBay labels and that includes the $8.40 surcharge for nonstandard length.

If you're seeing a rate in the $40s then either the package is much heavier than the 6 lbs you mentioned, or you're looking at Priority instead of Ground Adv which has a more expensive base rate + an $18 surcharge for the length.

And no it was only 6lbs and 13 oz but I shipped before apo but never got outrageous prices like these but it's something to learn from
