My pet peeve - again. How not to pack a light bulb.
My pet peeve is when a seller ships me a box in a bag or a padded envelope rather than in a BOX.
This one takes a cake.
It's a special LED light bulb.
Not packed in a poly mailer, not packed in a padded envelope, but wrapped in a manila envelope then taped.
Good thing he put the "fragile" sticker on it. I'm sure that helped a lot.
In the past when I have posted about this and asked what kind of feedback I should leave the seller,
people have said "As long as the item arrived undamaged why would you leave anything other than a positive?".
Well screw that. This seller is getting the feedback they deserve.

·4 months agoI agree, but it is honestly crazy how BIG companies ship things. a few years ago Target sent a glass lamp to us that we ordered for a wedding without any padding, just put it in a box with a couple other things. It broke to pieces. Amazon often ships things without proper packaging also. I could go on and on.
dogofwar777
·4 months agoI worked for the post office and you are completely wasting your time putting "Fragile" on any package. Packages have to be processed fast to get them to their destination so we would just look at the zip code and literally throw the package in whatever region it's headed to box. Packing is VERY important because when a package is thrown into its region box, a heavier package could land on top of it. The ONLY packages that were handled with care were those with extremely high insurance on them because the PO didn't want to pay if they were lost of damaged. Those packages were placed in their own seperate area and handled by only a few people.

·4 months agoI've had people request to put FRAGILE on packages because of their mail carrier, not necessarily for going through the postal system. One person had a mailman that was too lazy to open the gate to put the packages on her porch, so would THROW them about 15 feet, even after she complained.

·4 months agoYour pet peeve is when a seller ships a box within a bag or padded envelope? I know you're talking about a light bulb in this situation, so of course duh, fragile, put a FRAGILE sticker on it ... uhh ... i mean stick it in a box, DUH
Ok but seriously ... what upsets you about a box within a bag or a box within a padded envelope? Do you mean flimsy boxes?? Or do you just have an issue with a box within something else?
I have often put boxes within padded envelopes or bags ...
- I may use a very small box to protect a very small item, but the very small box is too small for a shipping label or the box is so small I think it may get easily lost or misplaced, so to make the package larger (harder to misplace) without adding a lot of weight, I use a padded envelope.
-Sometimes I'm reusing a box, or its ugly, or its got stickers or old labels on it, or it's got Amazon logos, or its whatever ... I use a poly mailer bag to wrap it so now it's clean plain white.
-99.999% of everything i ship is in a poly padded envelope, so sometimes if i need to ship a box i may also opt to wrap it in a poly mailer bag ... why? I like the waterproofing. Ever get a soaked box or soaked kraft padded envelope? I once got a priority flat rate box that felt like it went thru a hurricane, it was literally still soggy. You won't get that with poly mailer wrapped boxes.
So, quite literally, whats your pet peeve with boxes in bags/envelopes? Or do you mean flimsy boxes and flimsy packages (like thin flimsy retail packaging boxes for light bulb) in envelopes/bags?
inhawaii
OP4 months ago... when they ship me a item in its RETAIL box (not meant for shipping) in a plastic bag or padded envelope or in this case ... a manila envelope.
Do they not realize what happens to packages in transit?
They get kicked.
They get thrown.
They get crushed.
They get dropped.
They get stepped on.

·4 months agoI once received some small specialty halogen bulbs in nothing but a bubble envelope, the kind used in film projectors. Somehow, some way... they survived. I would never leave a seller a negative for that, I got what I paid for in the condition advertised. I did send them a nice message explaining why it was a... bad idea... to do that.
I would never leave a negative for a seller unless they attempted to commit fraud, or there was an issue and they were blatantly unwilling to make it right. A seller's reputation is gold. A friendly message educates them, which should be the goal, not revenge.

·4 months agoIf feedback is supposed to advise what to expect when you do a transaction on eBay, why would @inhawaii not use it to warn other buyers about poor packaging. Maybe the next guy who buys a bulb from this seller will get a handful of broken glass.
So .... if feedback is doing what it's fans says it's for, then let 'er rip.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would have not packaged that way. Sellers on this board always complain about receiving negative feedback from customers without any communications. I would recommend that you look at the transaction in whole, was it shipped on time? was it as described? Did work for you? The packing is one part of the transaction. I would probably let it go if the item is not damaged, and not leave feedback at all, they will probably get an automatic positive, which would be correct " Order delivered on time with no issues", because there were no issues with the product and delivery time.

That's actually the way I've handled it when a purchase arrives poorly packaged, unless it's damaged.
I just don't leave FB. But I think a DSR for packaging would be nice, and while I'm at it, let me give Amazon zero stars, as well.

·4 months agoI left a negative for a seller about 6 years ago, they shipped fragile items in a box with not a single bubble wrap or packing paper. I heard the glass inside when I picked up the package. I knew the seller was new and didn't want to cause any issues for them, I contacted them about the damage, and they said I broke the items on purpose to get a refund. Really🤗?

·4 months agoNot so fast. I have had buyers complain that too much packing was used and it was bad for all the waste.

How many therapists does it take to change a light bulb?
Just one, but the light bulb has to want to change.

·4 months agoBecause you luckily received the item undamaged I would not send bad feedback. I may send a separate message recommending some packaging tips.

·4 months agoInquiring minds want to know..... Did the special LED bulb arrive intact & functioning?
stainlessenginecovers
·4 months agoLED bulbs are plastic and not glass, and being just a 'diode' more than likely it still worked...BUT, I understand what James is saying, the 'box' is not meant to be a shipping box and just putting in a non-bubble manila envelope is NOT the way to ship things.
That seller needs to see a picture of the envelope to hopefully get an understanding of what packages look like/go through when shipping.
a_c_green
·4 months agoWell, some LED bulbs are indeed glass, such as GE's standard 60W Replacement Soft White LED bulbs, which are clear glass, but I agree that no one sets out to purchase a broken LED bulb, even if it's still technically functional.
I reserve padded envelopes for only mailing those items that can withstand squashing, though in some cases with small, thin items where a box might be overkill for the task, I'll surround the item with a cardboard ring, sometimes glued to a backing of cardboard, and that can survive a padded envelope just fine.
For small items that definitely need a box for traveling, I have a supply of lightweight 6"x4"x4" "Ecoswift" boxes, which are a thinwall corrugated material similar to USPS Priority Mail boxes. Those are available in various sizes and quantities from several sellers here.

I don't blame you. Even if it doesn't arrive broken, it reckless and unprofessional -- and it discourages buyers from shopping on eBay.

·4 months agoCall me confused. Are you saying there's a box inside the envelope? If there is, I am a assuming that it isn't a good box.

My pet peeve is when a seller ships me a box in a bag or a padded envelope rather than in a BOX.
Well.
Sometimes I ship an item inside a box that is then inside a poly bag. I do that, because the box might have stickers on it, or or labels, or a branding, etc. The poly bag makes it look nicer. But I do tape the bag taut and to the shape of the box, not just loose bag on a box like Amazon does all the time. But would that still be considered among your "pet peeves"?
For that matter, every single HDD I sell is bubble wrapped, boxed, shrink wrapped, then poly bubble mailer bagged.
So... By your logic, that would be bad too?
a_c_green
·4 months agoUsually when I receive a package like that, I know before I even open it that the Ground Advantage envelope will be enclosing a Priority Mail Flat Rate Small Box inside, which the seller got for free from USPS.

·4 months ago@a_c_green
Well, in my case you would be dead wrong. But I understand your thinking. And I have ran into that myself from other sellers. But I don't do that. I will reuse a USED priority box sometimes (usually cut up for support packaging), but never a new one. And for the past couple of years now, I haven't even used any priority shipping at all. I turned in most of my boxes back to the post office last Fall. lol

ajs_coins_and_alchemy
·4 months ago@12345jamesstamps
Hahaha ... this happened to me ... I like this story
Case of absolutely atrocious shipping. If you know what proof sets are ... it was a batch of (20) 2000's-2010's proof sets, held together by 2 rubber bands, wrapped in basically a paper mailer ... Literally 1 or 2 layers of paper... No box. No bubble wrap. no padded envelope. NOTHING. 10 pounds of proof sets, rubber banded together, protected by literally a layer or two of a waxy paper mailer and shipped across the country. I had so many cracked lenses/slabs and shards of plastic it was just a mess.
It was a single auction win, so 1 item (lot) ... so I filed for 1 return of arrived damaged, left them the 1 negative feedback they deserved, and immediately began driving to the post office to drop the return off.
Literally less than 10 minutes later (before i even got to post office) I had made 3 sales. Woohoo! ... wait what? .... UHOH ... In the 10 minutes since I filed the return/left the feedback: They got my return request, saw my negative feedback, blocked me as a buyer, and went into my store and found the 3 VERY RANDOM JUNK cheapest items I had for sale (9.95-12.95 ea w/ free shipping). Bought all 3 as separate orders too. Immediately obvious they are about to triple down on me and hit back hard. Right?
Long story short, I believe I went directly to eBay social media crew right away to get help/advice from them and to at least get it on record. Like before i even ship the items, note it on record that I'm about to get negative feedback and its all retaliatory. They said they see what I was saying but of course can't do anything til something happens and can't predict the future, so just proceed as normal, but it's noted for the record.
In the end, the bad retaliatory seller (buyer in this case) only opened 1 (bogus NAD) return case for 1 item, and left only 1 negative feedback on that 1 item. I refunded that item and let them keep it. (They never filed returns on other 2, so I kept those sales). I went back to eBay to fight the negative FB citing retaliation.
Wouldn't you know, eBay removed the negative feedback they left me, but the negative feedback I left them stuck 😉 ... oh and those 3 random junk items they bought, because I offer free shipping, when it was all said and done I actually came out on top and made more money on the remaining 2 sales than if I had sold and shipped the 3 items to 3 different buyers. So i actually made money on top of the whole ordeal 😂
Not sure why they only filed 1 return and left 1 negative feedback. Not sure if they cooled off or if they were planning to do subsequent returns/FBs ... not sure if eBay intervened with some sort of warning or something and they backed off
I definitely am a bit timid to leave anyone negative feedback ever again .... but boy that situation worked out in my favor on so many levels.
