Meaningless "Order status" page: Paid vs Posted vs Delivered
Yes there is more granularity to be seen if a tracking number has been assigned for an order but not all items are shipped with tracking enabled. The Order status page is currently not serving either the Vendor or the Buyer in any meaningful way.
- The only meaningful line of demarcation is when the physical package leaves the custody of the vendor and enters the custody of whichever agent is responsible for physical delivery of a deliverable package.
An extremely short delay (minutes or seconds) between Paid and Posted is meaningless self-praise that may very well reflect the speed of printing a shipping label ... Congratulations! ... for absolutely nothing. A printed shipping label does not constitute a "deliverable package" so custody and responsibility for performance still squarely rests within the Vendor's domain.
The meaningful measure of "vendor in-house" performance vs "delivery service" performance is when custody transfers from Vendor staff to Courier/Postal/Shipping service staff.
This issue is not a case of the odd vendor here and there deliberately abusing the Order status page but rather it is an eBay systemic shortfall that suggests eBay is not motivated to apply meaningful criteria to the event labelled "Posted".
- The delay between completion of auction/sale and Paid status is a measure of a Buyer's chosen method of payment and the buyer's personal delays with handling of that payment (as expeditiously as possible) after completing an auction or making a purchase.
- The delay between Paid and Posted ought to be a measure of the efficiency of a Vendor's in-house handling of an item and subsequent package culminating in physically handing the deliverable package over to the Shipping/Postal/Courier/Transport "delivery service" provider.
- The delay between Posted and Delivered is then a fair measure of the performance of a third party that is not the Vendor's staff and not the Customer's "staff" ... it is purely the "delivery service" staff and transport methods.
- The delay between Delivered and feedback posted is then a measure of a Buyer's (and/or buyer's staff) handling of the delivered package culminating in the Buyer making a judgement about the item.
How many decades must we wait for eBay to fix this meaningless order status pages?
"Posted" ought to mean the "delivery service" provider has custody.
