Is eBay providing false shipping rates or is FedEx altering labels?
Sold a used tire, (8/32nds tread, 10/32nds is new) to someone in Alabama. I live in Miami and shipping was $24.49 according to eBay and the following inputs: MICHELIN Pilot Sport All-Season 4 265/35ZR20 XL 99Y, 27" x 11" x 27", 30 lbs.
Yesterday, i get a email from eBay about a undercharged shipping label from FedEx.
Since eBay has this AI for everything, i would assume that AI is also linked to the listing/shipping section where the AI does know it's a tire and not a floating device so it would select proper shipping cost. Knowing it's not a regular square or rectangular box, there should be EXTRA fees listed when purchasing shipping labels on eBay.

·10 months agoPriority Tire I'm sure has advanced permission to ship that way. Sellers using ebay's FedEx account dont. We also cant ship in a tube or skewed box without surcharges, other's can ship tubes, shrink wrapped items & skewed boxes FedEx without any issues...it all depends on how your account is set. They do however have guidelines they must follow when doing it, like exactly how to place the label
I've always said, all sellers are in the shipping business when they sell on line. Sellers need to know all they can about shipping......& buyers need to know all they can about returns when buying on line

OP10 months agoI listed bunch of stuff and don't remember if i DID or DID NOT check the irregular package box. eBay won't let me look back at that so it's past tense and i basically, got screwed. In my opinion, eBay SHOULD throw out a yellow caution disclaimer when shipping tires or anything that is NOT square or rectangular, the AI should know about hat already from the Item Description or Title or Photos. That AI apparently is still too dumb to be aware of this and i'm definitely not alone in that boat of crap! Now i'm extra $$$ behind on my sale..
You made a post about this and it's great, i applaud you BUT, it's after the fact that i and thousands more got screwed on this.. Basically, laying a pillow under your head after you fall on your head..

·10 months agoeBay does not make any assumptions about how a seller plans to pack an item, nor should they @malpopies . They have no idea if you are shipping that tire bare, shrink-wrapped, in a box, on a palette, or some other way.
This is up to you as the seller to designate the listing with "irregular package" - looks like you didn't do that and you're now hit with a legit cost adjustment. Sorry I don't have better news, but at least you now have information on what to do in the future.

·10 months agoif it was not in a box, that is why you got zapped, that fee can be a lot higher depending on what was shipped not in a box.
metal case, wood box, shrink wrapped, tubes, tires, wheels, liquids, etc and more all incur "extra handling charges"
some of that can surcharge be avoided if marked as such before actually shipping it, but in any case it will still be higher if not in a actual box.

·10 months agoFedEx and USP are a mess on eBay for calculating shipping cost. Your item would have been billed at dimensional weight of 58#, over sized and irregular if not shipped in a box. So my calculations you caught a brake if they only billed at 49#.
You can ship a tire as just a tire without a box and billed at just the actual weight if you have your own FedEx account and it is set up that way. Once you have an account it is easy to have an account manager make those adjustments if that is your business shipping tires.
I know none of this helps, but using FedEx on eBay is just an estimated cost, and until eBay can get it right, I am never shipping anything on eBay's FedEx or UPS account

OP10 months agoI haven't sold on eBay for few years, took a break since FB marketplace was good but i restarted to sell on eBay and i didn't know that so many things changed for the worse.. Lesson learned, good thing it was only $37 and not $400! Sadly, i've sold 2 used tires, one went to Alabama and the other to Philadelphia.. I can't wait to see the surcharge for PA..
I've sent it bare, took the fedex label and clear taped it around to the tire, just like i get tires from other sellers on eBay, including Priority Tire.
This concludes this mystery, too bad @wastingtime101 guide is not attached in the shipping selection section when listing new stuff..
