Incorrect shipping charge by ebay/usps help?!
I purchased an ebay shipping label (usps) after a sale and it said $5.15. I was charged $186. I contacted ebay and they said it was usps that needed to refund me. Contacted usps and they said it was ebay to refund and then said they can only help if they have a revenue insurance number (aka usps adustment id). Contacted ebay again and they said they didn't have that number but within 48 hours I'd have a refund no problem. It's been longer than 48 hours. Has anyone had this happen and actually gotten a refund?

·2 years agoHello Geeky,
I had this happen on April 9th. The shipping should have been 6.26 , but instead I was charged 163.15. My bank account was charged and my remaining available funds depleted. USPS was able to confirm what I entered for dimensions and weight and it was correct. Ebay had record of the exact same data. I got the same back and forth as to who was to refund me. The final customer service rep at Ebay said that every 15 days ebay gets a report showing if shipping was under and if so , the seller would be charged the difference. She said it also applies to over payment. They said I should get a refund. I've got my calendar set and am waiting to see if I get my money back.

OP2 years agoI would love for that to be the case but at this point I'm doubtful. This happened on March 18th and it still hasn't refunded. I'm sure it will be up to us to chase it down. Good luck! 🙂

Have you checked this page https://www.ebay.com/ship/lmng to see what the adjustment was for?
wastingtime101
·2 years agoThere was no adjustment. It was the initial label cost. I can replicate the rates with eBay shipping calculator. $5.15 is 12 oz to zone 5 ground advantage. Inflate the dimensions to oversized rates and it comes out to $186.92 to zone 5.
Although the seller said $186 even but could have been rounding.
Easy as having a 12x12x6 package but making a typo 12x12x66
Hopefully if that’s what happened the USPS APV system will catch the overpayment and refund the seller.

OP2 years agoThe measurements and weight were accurate when the label was created.
Yesterday was a month since it happened and today I had a shipping adjustment credited to my account.
Not sure if it was because of this thread, the month of time passing or the fresh email I sent to USPS yesterday but the issue has been resolved.

·2 years agoHow did you get notice of this charge? Was it from ebay or from your bank?
Is it possible it was a coincidence between the time you purchased the label and the overdraft? Is it possible that you used your checking account (?) to pay another bill and bounced a check?
What does it show in the payee section on your bank statement? (If you haven't received the statement yet, you can check it online.)
I'm guessing that this is unrelated to a shipping label.

OP2 years agoI noticed the charge on my weekly payout when it caused an overdraft on my checking account since I didn't have enough in my ebay seller account to cover it. The checking account it pulled from is only used for ebay so there was no reason anything would pull from it. It showed ebay as the charge.

·2 years agoIf you don't use the label, eventually it will be refunded.
Not fast.
And that's hard on the budget.
But eventually.

·2 years agoReally dumb question I suppose...but can one dispute the charge with their banking source as not a recognized charged?...since no one wants to claim who should refund the seller as such.

·2 years agoI don't see any of your sold items that would come close to that shipping charge.
Do you enter the dims, weight, and select calculated shipping based on buyers' location on your listings?
Do you have your receipt from the USPS? That will show the package weight and tracking number that will match your order. With that, your other sales information you can pull and print, you should be able to argue this issue.

OP2 years agoI have all the proof that it was an error, I just can't seem to find anyone that wants to give my money back. I wish the adjustment number was listed in our seller hub so I could only have to deal with usps.
wastingtime101
·2 years agoWas it a cost adjustment or was it the initial charge? Above you seemed to indicate it was the initial charge and not an adjustment?
If it was an adjustment you should have received an email from eBay with the adjustment number. You can also find cost adjustment details here: https://www.ebay.com/ship/lmng
Cost adjustments happen to me all the time. It's a pain in the ass, but it's easy to appeal. Send USPS an email verifypostagehelp@usps.gov with the following details (or you can call the number on the USPS page linked below):
In order for USPS to investigate your dispute they must have the following information:
I generally describe the problem, as well. Shipped 8 oz t-shirt in plain white polymailer with eBay logo, was up charged based on a Priority Flat Rate Envelope packaging which was not used.
Educated guess: packages sometimes get stuck together or are too close together when going through the sorting machinery so the scans are reading a different package. When you file an appeal, USPS will look at the actual photos taken during sorting and they will see the package and grant the refund.
USPS sends the refund to your original source of payment (credit card, bank, paypal, etc).

OP2 years agoIt was an initial charge. It said it was $5.15 but then it charged it as $186. Thank you for the cost adjustment link, I'll be saving that. I will send the number from there with the rest of the info again and maybe it will get me somewhere. Thank you!

·2 years agoThe only times I've seen the initial charge off by that much is user error - accidentally putting in wrong dimensions.
Like when the dimension from the listing is 5 and someone tries to change it to 7 on the label page, and they accidentally end up putting in 57.
Not saying that's what happened here, but based on similar reports from other sellers over the years that is the usual cause. Mentioning it so you can be extra aware in the future @onegeekymother .
If you did enter wrong dimensions, USPS's APV system is supposed to catch it when the package goes through processing then credit you the cost adjustment after the fact - usually takes a few weeks. The system doesn't always work as it should, but per USPS guidelines, that's what's supposed to happen.
Please do keep us posted on what happens.

OP2 years agoIt makes sense that that is the first thought but it was a 12 oz small box package. Measurements were accurate since I always double check.
I am really hopeful that either usps notices and refunds or they actually respond to my charge dispute. It's been a month so I fear it will only happen if I keep pestering.

·2 years agoHi @onegeekymother . Go to this page:
https://www.ebay.com/ship/labels/seller-hub
Find the label. Under the column Shipment Details / Cost, click on the service name Ground Advantage. A pop-up box will appear that shows you the weight and dimensions entered when you purchased the label. Then you'll know for sure and if you're going to fight this as an erroneous charge, you'll want a screenshot that confirms the weight/dimensions when you purchased the label.

·2 years agoI've had that happen before. My guess would be that it was most likely this.

·2 years agoGo to your seller hub and look at your payment transaction report to make sure the charge was for shipping. What item was this for, where did it ship to and if the weight and dim's were correct what class of postage did you use to ship the item?
I have only received one of these in all the years that I have been selling on eBay but I also have not used eBay to purchase shipping labels in quite some time. I have seen postings on this forum about USPS unilateral surcharges but never for one that excessive. If it is a USPS unilateral surcharge USPS should have provided eBay with some information on the justification for the charge.
As far as contacting customer support these days unless you are going through one of the social media sites the customer support is pretty much useless. The will tell you what you want to hear to get you off the phone even if that means lying to you. EBay is going to do NOTHING to fight the USPS surcharge other than paying it. This is your battle to fight with USPS and yes eBay DOES have the adjustment number.

·2 years agoWas the $186 for multiple label? Like for all labels purchased at one time?
https://www.ebay.com/sh/fin
Or go to the Order Details page for that order, and what does it show for Shipping? Does it show $186 there?
onegeekymother
OP2 years agoIt was a single label. I have no idea where the amount came from since the item that sold was less than $50 too. It was just a random fluke of a number that was charged instead of the amount listed.
onegeekymother
OP2 years agoBecause it showed $5.15 I shipped the item and completed the order. It wasn't until there was an overdraft on my checking account that I knew it happened.
rosszonebricks
·2 years agoWell.... if you've already used the label and sent the item, I hate to say it's unlikely you'll get a refund.

·2 years agoAre you even sure the charge is just for a shipping label? eBay will charge to your payment option, seller fees, store fees and other fees owed, any refunds not just labels if you don't have enough funds pending or available.
onegeekymother
OP2 years agoIt was just an incorrect shipping charge for that one item. Ebay verified it was incorrect. I'm just trying to find out who will refund it, ebay or usps.
rosszonebricks
·2 years agoGo here:
https://www.ebay.com/ship/labels/seller-hub
Find the label, and click Actions, then Cancel Label.
You can then buy another label, making sure you are entering the correct weight, dimensions, etc.
Worth noting, it will take 2-3 weeks before you'll receive a refund for the label. USPS needs to make sure it was never used, THEN will refund you. For me, it's always been just added into my eBay pending payout funds when I do finally get the refund.
Edit: This only applies if the label was never actually used.
onegeekymother
OP2 years agoWhen I submitted screenshots I double checked and the measurements and weight was correct. The charge they said I'd pay was $5.15 but instead $186 was pulled from my account.

·2 years agoIf you haven't shipped yet and it hasn't been more than 5 days since you purchased the label you can Void it.
Often times it's user error that caused the higher label charges like typing in the wrong weights and dimensions. Doing things in hurried fashion and not looking over everything before clicking purchase label. It happens most sellers have experienced this at one time or another.

·2 years agoCan't you go to Orders from your Seller Hub, then Track and manage your shipments, and cancel it?
