I need help asking ebay to step in
I sold a large breakable item for $300 and shipped it via UPS. I painstakingly packed the item and UPS does not dispute this via the photos I provided to them. This took place in August 2023, and it broke in shipping (my mistake may have been writing "fragile" all over it and some tool didn't like it). I felt it necessary to almost immediately refund the buyer to avoid making her unhappy with myself or ebay, so now I've lost the expensive item, and I've lost my payment of $300, and now my performance is a little tarnished. After months of work with UPS to prove my case regarding their negligence, I received a check for the broken item from UPS for 1/3, just over $100 and I'm not happy, (I just received the check and it's April 2024) I would like ebay to step in with UPS and help me to receive my full refund. I believe that a full $300 is due to me. In addition to that I need ebay to remove the "stain" of the broken item from my performance, as I refunded the buyer in a timely manner to keep ebay and myself in good standing. When I contacted ebay recently they told me the issue is resolved, they meant with the buyer, however the issue is most assuredly not resolved.

·2 years agoWhatever you were paid by UPS is determined by UPS, your subcontractor for the shipping.
If you had insured for the full sell price, that does not mean you will be paid the full sell price, carriers including UPS often require proof of what you paid for the item and only pay that amount. Based on the time required to get paid, I suspect that was the case.
Many sellers who buy their shipping online do not realize that all of the standard terms of carriage provided by the shipping company apply. Ebay does not tell you what they are, that is your responsibility.
You must have packed well enough for UPS to not reject your claim immediately, they often do.
Hopefully, you received your cost back, UPS does not guarantee you will profit on the transaction,

·2 years agoYou shouldn't have received a defect since you say you refunded without ebay stepping in to do so. What harm to your account is showing? If you just mean the not as described return, those roll off after a year.
I feel a congratulations is in order for successfully winning a damaged in shipping claim with UPS.

OP2 years agoI haven't sold anything on ebay since February and it said my performance is "at risk" so I went to check and one of the problems was the broken item, it was a glaring issue in it's own column.

·2 years agoAs others have noted, it sounds like you paid the standard shipping rate without upgrading insurance coverage... if that's the case, it's game over. Ebay generally will not step into a dispute between a seller and the shipping service they chose, and the end result here is typical: ebay considers the situation resolved because the buyer was made whole with a refund. They don't much care about the seller's circumstance 99% of the time.

OP2 years agoIf ebay does not step into help me with UPS, I will file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission just as I've done with UPS. Trying to gain a resolution should not be this difficult.

·2 years agoDid you insure it for the full price or just took the free $100 insurance they offer.
Unless you insured it for the full price, all they'll pay is the $100.

OP2 years agoUpon purchase of the label, I read that I was covered for $300.

·2 years agoDid you pay for the extra insurance?

·2 years agoConsider yourself very lucky if you got UPS to give you anything. They are the absolute worst when it comes to filing a damage claim. As for the amount.... When you purchase a label, it says the item is insured for $100. If you want more, there is a spot to increase the insured value for a price. You have to do this when purchasing the label. Believe me.....we have ALL learned this lesson the hard way.

·2 years agoIs your issue not with UPS? I've never shipped with UPS (nor opened a claim), but why did they only give you 1/3 of the value?

OP2 years agoyes my issue is with UPS, however UPS has a specific department related to ebay damages and I was told I qualify for "exceptional payout through ebay" AND now I want eBay's help. However, all of the layoffs have occurred and there is almost no one to help us ebay sellers.

·2 years agoYou want eBay to step in on a transaction that occurred a year ago? That is not going to happen. As you were already told by eBay. Sorry. You will just need to write it off as a loss when you file taxes.
If your buyer opened a not as described return with you and you refunded, refunding closed the case so eBay is out of the picture.
The defect in your service metrics or dashboard will roll off after August of this year.

OP2 years agoyou clearly didn't read what I said.

·2 years agoClearly you didn't read my response.
What makes you think eBay is going to assist you with something that occurred nearly a year ago?
They are not..it is between you and UPS.
As others have stated.....
You didn't purchase additional insurance so all you get is the insured amount you initially paid. Which was $100.00.....
